Well (2) clearly conflicts with (1) because you are saying people don't trust Phil's account because it comesfrom Phil. Well that is no different to claiming he is lying.

But it's not just phil's account though is it. There was a taxi driver interviewed yesterday on breakfast TV and he was like "god its really boring, everythings closed and there are no customers" and they couldn't get him off the TV fast enough. They wanted hysterics and drama and all they got was "everythings shut and i'm bored"

As I mentioned previously, we quite recently had an earthquake in Istanbul that killed 30,000.

Even the Turkish media gave it less coverage than the Western media has already given Sandy. The Western media gave it about 1% of that coverage.

Now I don't expect the likes of Balbi to see anything wrong with that. It doubtless conforms to his Fox News vision of the world. But decent people will notice this discrepancy, be advised thereby, and adjust their views accordingly.
 
I'm sure its very unpleasant for lots of people. Having your house flooded and having the power cut off is a drag but its not the epic disaster that the media are making it to be and it definately doesn't deserve the days and days of wall to wall hysterical coverage that it is recieving. 48 people dead is very sad for those involved but its not a disaster. What happened in Thailand and Cambodia last year was a disaster. What happens in Bangladesh every year is a disaster. Having the bloated bodies of your loved ones floating in the streets is a disaster, having your town wiped off the map and its residents buried under the rubble is a disaster. Having your entire national crop destroyed and economy wrecked is a disaster. The emergence of cholera and dengue fever is a disaster. Hundreds of thousands made permanently homeless and living in tents for years on end is a disaster. A power cut and flooded subways is an inconvenience.

Anyway, I'm not sure what to do now. The Newark Airport website says my flight is "cancelled," but maybe it's worth a try going there and seeing what I can do? Although getting out there is likely to be a problem. I'd really prefer to just stay put for a bit, but then there's no telling when I'll get on another flight, and my money is running out.

Balbi, if you'll send me $100 I promise to cry and say how awful everything is for 24 hours. Do we have a deal?
 
Bugger it, I'm going to Newark to see what I can arrange.

If I'm back here in a few hours, I'll keep Balbi happy by whinging and moaning about the dreadful situation for a bit. Then I'll go and get pissed again. Sounds like a reasonable compromise to me.

Not that they automatically discount it because it's Phil. Automatically distrust it, yes, probably. It's Phil.

He's no more trustworthy than fox news. It's Phil. Distrusting Phil is not the same as trusting Fox News or any News. And it doesn't mean that people think the effects of the storm have been felt exactly the same everywhere.


Distrusting phil is not the same as saying 'believes fox news'.
 
One interesting tidbit i just saw in the paper. This thing's actually a boost for the US economy. $40bn worth of investment apparently. Maybe another reason for the exaggerated media response.

Well I'd certainly like to see any evidence of my supposed untrustworthiness. But of course Quimcunx will not produce any, because she is well-known by all as an unregenerate and habitual liar.

Anyway, Quim and Balbi will be happy to hear that I'm going to be stuck here for TWO MORE Days. After paying for the hotel I'll have about $50 to my name. And it's Halloween tonight, the biggest party of the year in NYC. This year's will be the biggest EVER. So I can't be broke.

Hmmmm.... I believe I have a plan. Hang on a minute....
 
OK, I know you wouldn't want me to be stuck in Manhattan with no cash on Halloween. So here's what we'll do. This afternoon at 2pm my time, I'll go stand in front of the Times Square webcam again. You lot can lay bets on how long it takes me to persuade a woman to go for a drink with me. Each bet will cost 20 quid, which you will wire to me by Western Union (details provided by PM). The closest guess wins 50% of the total bets, which I'll send you immediately. I keep the other 50%.

can someone enlighten me as to phildwyer's history on here and the obvious mistrust? i cant say ive ever really come across his work before.
