How does our home phone link to VOIP?

I can't see how that would work. How would you know that they were there before you phoned them?
It wasn't the most efficient of systems and involved a certain amount of chance and guest work. There was a kind of a code of etiquette whereas if someone else answered you would ask them to tell the person you wanted to speak to call you back. You would do so secure in the knowledge that the chance of this message actually get passed on was minimal.
If the person was there but didn't want to speak to the caller they would make frantic hand gestures and the answerer would lie on their behalf and claim they weren't there. An earlier version of call blocking as it were.

As massive change is coming with regard to landline telephony, I can't be the only person who is wondering how it is going to work.

We have a quad system, base station in the hall, three wireless satellites in other rooms.

I've just had a look at the base station, other than a standard phone socket, it has no connection point.

Help please.
