Yep, just line it, don't bother with the hole.

Water will soak into the pot. If it freezes the pot will end up in bits.

It needs lining or sealing.

Are you going to bury the pot in the ground? That will help with the evaporation, and stop it freezing solid.

this is a fairly typical one of my Brainwave then rush to act on it immediately things, so i'd already spread the epoxy stuff onto the potbottom before reading the post about how it might freeze and shatter my best pot and now i'm sort of at a loss what to do next other than carry on regardless.
ETA it does seem to work at least, the underwater epoxy for very impatient people.

I'd use a cork and some bathroom sealant. I did this some years ago quite successfully. The water lilies looked great in it, as did the irises.

Yes it was, and it was when I lived in Surrey so there wasn't a lot of frost such as you'd get further north.
