How are you finding the tournament so far ?

I'm enjoying it on a number of different levels. I'd like to see Portugal doing better. But for the first time that I can remember I am watching the football with my father. We were estranged for twenty years but have become very close over the last few years so this is not just good football but also a great 'family' event. Whoever wins it will be truly memorable.

The group stage of the Euros is generally better than the World Cup and this time is no exception: Good, tight, tactical games, usually with a sprinkling of quality players.

It's been a long time since I've had so many incentives to get on with works in progress, first the jubilee and now this. :-/
:D

I've thoroughly enjoyed it so far. The Czech game last night was the worst match I've seen, but the situation made it compelling.

Every group has been tight, with no team definitely through before the last match. Ireland probably the only team to look a bit out of their depth. And lots of different styles of football on display. I like that. Much as I admire the way Spain play, I'd hate it if everyone played like that. There is also a place for wingers trying to get to the byline to whip crosses in. Great stuff. :)

I have the same situation with my Dad, re-estranged for years but now quite close ,except when I asked him if he had been watching it he replied

' no I'm done with football now , it's far too much to do with money'

Miserable sod :D

I think this is one of the reasons I still really like the euros and World Cup. The players are paid, but these competitions are really not to do with money, not in the same way as domestic leagues.

Oh, and the advertising boards are not constantly on the move. :) That is something that's made Match of the Day almost unwatchable for me now.

I tried saying this to him but within 5 words of opening my mouth I realised I was onto a loser and shut up :D

I think these are nearly good rules. But it appears that because of these rules, Spain and Croatia can both guarantee going through by drawing 2-2 in their final match.

I also think UEFA ranking shouldn't count. Far better to decide it on number of cards in this tournament first.

Spain or Croatia will probably not care if they play the winner or runner up in our group. It is likely (ish) to be France top and England second. I would probably prefer England of those too but neither look unbeatable.

I agree. I think they'd prefer England - just. But I think Spain might just prefer to face France. France play in a far more similar way to Spain, just not quite as well. I genuinely don't think Spain would fancy England. It would be Chelsea-Barca again, really, except that I reckon England are better going forward than Chelsea.

Tonight's games look the most interesting on paper. Germany may close ranks as all they need is a drawer to be certain.

The Portugal vs Netherlands game should be a battle though. I think that Portugal are the likely win but the Netherlands might click finally. That or the referee might start booking the diving cheats and give the Netherlands a chance.

The further into the tournament he messes it up, the more he will cry. ;)

I loved his sulk after Varela scored the winner in their last match. The whole of the rest of the team went berserk, but he looked very pissed off.

He gives away a penalty, misses a penalty, misses an open goal, gets booked. Then when substituted hurls the captains armband in the referees face and punches his manager in the face. All while crying his eyes out. Then goes on twitter and calls Portugal a 'nation of pigs'

He is the anti-Messi, isn't he? Preening showpony with a planet-sized ego, who can't stand the idea that someone else won the match for them.

Still, the way he terrifies defenders is a hell of a thing to watch.

And I've got Portugal in the sweepstake.

Whilst uefa do use fair play rankings (which includes bookings etc) as the last resort,The number of bookings etc is determined largely on the whim of the referee, for example, the Spanish referee in the opening game was far more card happy than Howard Webb in the other opening group A game. At least using the coefficients means that you are basing it on a team's results.

Read somewhere that 2 teams had already qualified for the knock out phase after the first 2 group games at Euro 2008,we're having to wait for the final group games to see who goes through this time, even Germany with 6 points could still get go home early,as someone has pointed out the only team that have looked out of their dept has been Ireland,I mean who would have given the Czechs a chance of qualifying after their 4-1 spanking in their 1st match.
