Holiday in the UK. Whitby, York, Scarborough.

Can’t go wrong with those three places - though in Covid times I’d book popular things like Yorvik and Betties well in advance.

I was going to say hire a car but as you don’t drive I’d deffo stay in each place rather than try to ‘commute’

Also another vote for Hull. It’s well underrated and has at least three days worth of just museums and fish bothering. Perhaps a back up this time if you can’t get accommodation in Scarborough or Whitby?
I wouldn‘t go to Betty’s. It is overpriced. Tourists love it, but it is not worth it except to say that you went there.

Yeah. What dessiato said. I didn't actually enjoy Harrogate that much - I found Ripon, Thirsk, or Northallerton much more enjoyable.

Personally, I'd do a week in York - including 1 day for Durham, and 1 day for the Yorkshire Dales - and whatever time you've left spent in Whitby. Beach, Town, Abbey, and walking on the Moors.

I really like it, yes its a chain now and yes its over priced but its still nice and FAR cheaper than a proper tea in a London hotel.
When did Betty's become A THING?

When I was a kid it was the sort of place people went into for a quick mid- or post- Saturday shopping in town coffee! I remember the murals on the walls from childhood. I don't know if they're still there as I haven't been in the main one for decades - it's always too busy.

There used to be a good bar underneath it called The Oak Rooms back in the day.

As a child - so, a LONG time ago, we used to go to Betty's when we visited York with the choir, the school, or my family. It was a bit of a treat, but only because we were skint and it was tea from a tea shop.

A decade or two later, I went to York for a job interview at York Council and nipped in to Betty's for a cuppa beforehand. It used to be that sort of place. Just a tea shop. Not a tourist in sight.

I also visited it, as a tourist, back in the early 90s, I think it must have been, and it was still only a tea shop. A nice one, but still only a tea shop.

I have probably had tea in there at least 30 times.

So, I was startled to see a queue round the block to have tea at Betty's, when I visited a few years ago, and several times since. I have not been to Betty's since then, of course. I am not bloody queuing for it!

My sentiments entirely!

There is/was another Betty's, on Stonegate, where I go in the shop on the ground floor to buy coffee (and often a small box of their ludicrously expensive chocolates as a present for some friends who feed my their out-of-this world home-cooked curry).

It has/had a cafe upstairs,, which was a bit quieter than the main one (but still busy). Again, I used to get taken in there as a child. My sister and I would get taken by my gran when she met one of her old schoolfriends for tea. Back then that was also a fairly ordinary, but nice, cafe and certainly not on the tourist trail!

It became a Taylor's, then a Betty's. I think the cafe upstairs is closing as they can't make it accessible - very steep winding stairs IIRC.

It’s not uncommon in parts of Asia to be able to check in to a big 5 star chain hotel (a Park Hyatt or Intercontinental perhaps) direct from a red eye flight, especially with status with the hotel chain.

I’ve often pitched up to a hotel in the UK before 1pm and been given a room however I do have top tier status with the hotel chain which must help. I don’t tend to stay at small independent hotels which in theory could be flexible if given a precise time but in practice may not have the economy of scale if the person who works reception for afternoon check ins is cleaning the room during late morning

Hi guys.
I'll be staying in York for for the whole trip, relatively near the national rail museum and the river ooze.
Where would it be nice to go for a morning run? I'm thinking 10, 15, maybe 20k if I am feeling fruity.

along the river and through the big park
What is the big park? I'm seeing raw cliff park, rowntree park and all sorts of green spaces.
Is there anything good for views? On the google map it looks like it might be a grand open area following the river west after rawcliffe park.

I only really know the very centre of York but looking at the OS map it looks like there are paths both down and up the river Ouse, also path along the Foss and quite a long disused railway track just to the east of the city centre. Going up the river to the north looks nice as you can run up the river and go round Clifton Park / Clifton Ings and Rawcliffe Country Park.

I love York but I don't think it's generally a good place for views - all very flat round there.

Well that is perfect for running. When I said views I guess I meant that also included just nice looking green areas, or anything nice to look at. . . I'm not particularly interested in running up a mountain and looking down on York or anything like that. I just don't want to be running past a rubbish laden alleys or streams filled with shopping trolleys.

You could run along the solar system trail which runs from York to Ricall. Depends where you start running from. Are you staying right in the centre of York?
