Holiday in the UK. Whitby, York, Scarborough.

I love York but I don't think it's generally a good place for views - all very flat round there.
There is lamel hill on the east side quite close to the university
formed by glaciers pushing debris down thru the vale of York in the ice age
its where the parliamentarians put their cannon to bombard the city in the English civil war
at the highest point is a weird water tower that looks like a castle and the remains of an old tump
this is called siwards how, it’s a bit spooky, i stumbled on a bit of magic ritual up there as a kid....

My whole family is going to Cayton Bay near Scarborough this year on various campsites. We are staying in a glamping pod.

I was looking at going to York this weekend, but it appears you have to pre-book dates and times to visit pretty much every museum etc, and that's entirely put me
It was quite busy. Even had to pre book the space museum time on the drive up. My wife booked the chocolate museum on the day if that helps. It turns out I'm really into museums and mostly just ran around the city wall several times.

Is that still the case in England or stuff not updated on line. I've taken a chance with one or two places and it was fine.

We've just returned from York and yes, we found that anything indoor had to be booked, and that it was generally booked up several days in advance.

We enjoyed doing the outside - and free - stuff: the street performers in town, we did an exploring trail, went to St Mary's Abbey, had dinner at the excellent Three Tuns in Coppergate, walked the city walls, did a ghost walk etc.. but we'd have enjoyed the freedom to just pop into a museum if we'd fancied it.

We happily, easily filled two day in good weather. We're going back at October half term, but if everything is still booking only then we might review that.

Has anybody been on the Alpamere in Scarborough?

In a way I quite like booking ahead. It's a firm commitment, plus it's there because of limited numbers, so it never felt too suffocating. I hate crowds and get quite anxious, so it's reassuring that a museum trip won't get too crowded.

I think museums may quite like it too as they can predict the required staffing / catering levels, and also get the money in the bank earlier.

No queues, outside anything either. I think I quite like it.
Bit like the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka Tokyo. You had to book a month in advance, but unlike other theme parks it wasn't 'too' overcrowded. Bit of a bummer come lunch time, but never insane, keeps a comfortable level of people without massive queues or disappointment after a long journey (it's not mad central to Tokyo and it's not very close to Mitaka station).

I understand that one or two places [heritage railways & museums] are actually or planning to have trials of half pre-booking and half "walk-up" - I say half and half but the actual split varies a bit.

I can understand why attractions will benefit from keeping pre-booking as a thing ...

One of the "Great Little Trains of Wales" is having, because of the pre-booking, quite a good operating season after being shut for most of the pandemic. Nothing worse for the income stream than operating an almost empty train, especially both ways.

I’ve been looking around here for a break. It’s kind of impossible to find anywhere to stay. You get the feeling everyone who put off going anywhere is now having hols in Sept.

I was surprisingly pleased with the air b&b experience, but I guess you need a few people to make it worthwhile.

Bump

We're off to Whitby in a couple of weeks.
Any recommendations for dog friendly pubs?
moose you're a Whitby aficionado iirc?

I might be able to check with my local spies !

It is quite some time since I've been able to get there myself, the last time was pre-pandemic !
I suspect a few things will have changed.

Hi - yes, we normally go a couple of times a year, and went a few weeks ago for the first time since the pandemic. Whitby's been hard hit - nowhere has enough staff, so quite a few restaurants and bars have closed permanently or are doing reduced hours (Mondays in particular are tricky).

A lot of places seem to be dog-friendly. We drink in the Black Horse, on the old side - that often has dogs in, but if your dog's big, you won't fit, because it's absolutely tiny!
The Board Inn, near the abbey steps, is old-fashioned in a good way, allows dogs and has harbour views. There's also the Endeavour, the Middle Earth and the Fleece further up river on that side. Over the bridge and up the Hill, the Little Angel (not to be confused with the Angel Wetherspoons pub) is full of goths'n'dogs. I think the Station Inn likes dogs too.

Generally speaking, I've seen a lot of little dogs in cafes and pubs all over Whitby, but I think restaurants in the evening are more of a challenge. Some pubs, including the Endeavour, let you take your own chippy tea in though.

Hope you have a lovely time!

Say hello to my favourite views for me.
