Help me fill my Wire void!

Another vote for Breaking Bad - supreme TV
Also
The Shield
Underbelly
Brotherhood (Irish American politico/gangster drama)
and something completely different:
Friday Night Lights - drama about a small-town Texan high school (American) football team - starts off a bit soapy but develops into a gripping drama - just watched series 1, 4 more to go
and a bit of comedy:
Modern Family
Summer Heights High

It is very good isn't it, enjoying watching on Sky Atlantic - now on series 2.

Check out 'Boss' with an amazing performance from Kelsey Grammer, that will even make you forget Frasier.

As mayor of Chicago he is the dark Machiavellian Caesar he is determined pulls all the strings, whatever it takes.

More of a Francis Urquart Shakespearean villian, than the social realism of Baltimore's Carcetti but never a dull moment.

Through an odd set of circumstances I recently had to spend half an hour chatting to a CBE chap who I had little/nothing in common with. We ended up discussing The Wire (somehow) and after much agreement about it here said he 'was not sure what to watch now' so I suggested Deadwood as a first port of call.

Brotherhood was really good. I like a broody US drama to fill the early hours before the day starts proper.

Still not done Oz, Underbelly or Homicide yet but will get on these.

Can I put in Rescue Me?

I watched the first three series when on sky a few years back but all 5 are on demand atm and I had forgotten how fucking brilliant it is.

Firefighters with alcoholic, women, children, money and sexual problems but also funny, poignant, violent, crass, offensive and brilliant characterisation and acting.

I love the fact that watching in demand it has every warning possible before it.

No one apart from me has ever heard of it. But honest, it's good!!!!

no one said boardwalk empire? with 3 seasons done and the 4th on the go now there's plenty to plough through. Its up there with the wire and the sopranos for top telly for me. battlestar galatica is also well worth a watch (yeah, its sci-fi but little to no techno babble etc)

I did start Broadwalk Empire but then stopped for some reason.

Battlestar Galatica is good but I am not that big on sci-fi series. Agree it is worth a watch but certain not a 'Wire Void' filler.

I'm a big sci-fi fan, so loved BSG. But did get a few mates who aren't "into sci-fi" on it too.

Pick up on boardwalk empire again, it can be a bit slow to get started in a season but after the mid way point you see all the pieces of the story that have been put in place get played out (like them little bald headed bitches on the chess board)

oh, and watched the first season of Treme this week. Dunno if it's quite a Wire-void filler (though it's basically the same cast!), but again worth a watch. Didn't realise there was a second, third and (short) fourth series of it either so that's something to keep me going between weekly BE episodes.

Treme is excellent. Slow burner but I really got into it about halfway through S1 and S2 is even better.

Good to know, i was just REALLY getting into it from about ep 6 onwards. Good to know there's more and it gets better. For some reason I thought there was just the one season.

I'd tried to watch it before but wasn't really digging it, especially the music, but loved that aspect this time round.

I have not started 3rd series yet but keen to. It is filmed in a Wire style and I was pleased to see it worked across a genre. Real life stuff on camera sort of thing. I fucking love the chef Kim Dickens (Susan Spicer the NO chef consulted on the series.

Don't get me wrong, I like Breaking Bad (for example) but it can't hold a candle to these programmes in terms of research and character. Treme lacks the 'bang of the streets' The Wire has but it makes up for it in the music, culture and such.

#nospoilers but there is a real heart wrenching moment in S2

yeah, deffo on that one too! Properly believable characters in it too. I've never been able to get into breaking bad... watched seasons 1 & 2, thought it a it 'meh'. Everyone insisted it got better, so I watched season 3. Still not feeling it. There's only two more seasons yeah? Probably end up watching them anyway.

It's that 'bang of the streets' stuff that I've been looking for too- unless there's people slingin' drugs and guys getting whacked I'm generally not that interested :D
