Help me understand/appreciate this film

Am i a curiosity for believing the Coen brothers films are mostly tremendous? Not seen them all btw. its just that the ones i have seen have something about them that delights and chills and intrigues me. Love to hear some views from you intellectual types?

Am sure there'll be a few around shortly, but in the meantime... yes, pretty much tremendous. Haven't seen Intolerable Cruelty or The Ladykillers but with the rest of them, there's something in each to enjoy. Even the less acclaimed ones.

Favourite would be The Hudsucker Proxy. It seems to annoy other Coen Brothers fans, though.

If you like Fargo - their most lauded offering - check out the series.

It's a big thing with Star Wars "fans". See also Kelly Marie Tran and Moses Ingram.

Love the saga, but the toxic fans can make it unbearable sometimes.

Yep. I do dislike Jar-Jar, but it's not for the way the actor plays it, and even if it were that wouldn't justify abusing him. Jake Lloyd, who played little Anakin, got so much abuse he had to go into hiding, which is even more psychotic - sending death threats to a little kid because you don't like a role he played.

Love the Coens. But I'll never understand the praise for "Hail Caesar" because good lord that was tedious.

I like the movies of theirs that I've seen (LOVE Fargo, like OBWAT quite a lot), and like the others, but Hail Caesar was just boring. I tried three times because I also like some of the actors in it, but just couldn't get through it.

They are pretty quirky movies, though, which always means there's going to be a fair few people who don't like them for that reason.

Ahmed Best, the actor who played Jar Jar was subjected to relentless abuse online. He was so traumatized by the hatred that he almost ended it and nearly jumped off a bridge.
He has been recast as Jedi Master Kellerman Beq I The Mandalorian since and I believe his voice is heard in one of the new Disney spin offs leading some fans to be pleased for him.

He's also been in Attack of the Clones.

I'll find out which one it is. BRB!

Edit - it's strongly rumored by fan people that his voice is in the trailer for the new series of Ahsoka.

I’ve enjoyed all the Coen brothers films I’ve seen, which really isn’t that many of them when I look at the list.

He certainly was, although in a much reduced role. And a (Jar Jar) blink and you miss appearance in Revenge of the Sith.

Loved his cameo in The Mandalorian.

i have exactly this mystery, that film. One of my very favourite and most respected people, he Loves that film and on all other subjects of conversation i just either get it or else he can explain why i am wrong, and I almost always am. But this one, no.
It was just really shit? I didn't even get halfway though it because disliked so much but still:
Are there any Princess Bride fans here specifically?
Have you read the book? And do you like that if so? I like both, but dunno if someone might get on with one better than the other?

Such fans are thick fuckwits, but it’s not something exclusive or I reckon more prevalent among Star Wars fans than fans of other TV series or films. There have been numerous examples of actors playing odious villains, or delivering performances seen as disappointing, who have received abuse or threats from nutjobs. Even before the internet.

Yeah, as found out in the Kevin Spacey thread, some people do seem to have problems with discerning between characters and actors.

Tony Blair, "free Deirde."

Borrowing from my post in the Kevin Spacey thread:

John Altman.

Actually, this rings a bell. Distinctly recall Todd Carty (who played Mark Fowler) getting grief irl, because his character was HIV positive.

Susanna Dawson (who played his wife, Gill) also found it difficult to get work due to associations with her character's HIV status.

This was 30 years ago, when some people still weren't informed about HIV.

The Pocket Essentials book is a breezy, very enjoyable overview of their output (up to The Ladykillers)

June (who played Dot Cotton) use to get people in real life writing to her and walking up to her to warn her what her son was up to.

Imagine taking time to write out a letter to a fictional character to warn them about what you’ve seen on the telly. It’s a magic window that shows me the world.

Good grief Sue. i'm mainstream? You sound a bit like my son, who regards both socialist worker and the bbc as mainstream (don't ask).. 🤣

I'm misremembering this, so please correct me: didn't a football match show on their screen whether Ken had said yes to marrying Deidre?

They've been nominated for 15 Oscars and won four. Won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and best director three times and a load of other awards/nominations to boot. A high profile TV series was made based on one of their films.

So yeah, having a high opinion of their films isn't exactly an 'out there' view. :D
