Guardian's top ten war films.

Deer Hunter getting anywhere near this list is a joke, an insulting apologist for US barbarism bad joke.

agreed, repulsive film. Although i did like the start of it when they were actually hunting deer and getting married and stuff. It was the Vietnam part that was completely despicable .

I actually dont like Apocalypse now either, although theres bits that are well shot. But Leni Reifenstahl was a brilliant cinematographer too. Doesnt mean I like her films.

Tora Tora Tora should be on that. Not only brilliantly shot but managed to portray the japanese as actual human beings, more than most vietnam films can still manage with the Vietnamese .

Battle of the Neretva.

A Bridge too Far.

Waterloo.

Come and See is there, so fair enough. Battle of Algiers should be there too, way above either deerhunter or Apocalypse.

Operation Daybreak is a fine film too.

1. Where Eagles Dates is not a war film its a crime\caper film ala oceans 11.

Three Kings is somewhat similar but it hangs some heavy handed Hollywood symbolism on top it. Jarhead is a superior Hollywood film about the Gulf War.

2. paths to glory is again alsdo a war film and a court room drama.

The whole list is like that bit in High Fidelity where Jack Black derides John Cusack's bland top fives best 1st songs on albums. Every film is a safe choice.

I'd like to see "the battle of Algiers" or "pretty village pretty flame" on the list.

What, no mention of:

Das Boot

That would be because Das Boot is one of the most overrated pieces of mediocrity around.

Apocalypse Now is good but it's really just Hollywood acting edgy, definitely not number one.

Army of Shadows deserves a mention and Battle of Algiers surely.

eta link would be handy

The crime one is even worse, it doesn't have a single one of Melville's films.

Three kings?! SRS?!

If they wanted to put something more modern in then letters from iwo jima would have been better than three kings.

Fucksake even saving private ryan would have been better than three kings.

I'd have put full metal jacket in the list...... I think thats by far the best 'nam film ive seen.

Deer Hunter should be in the top 3. Brilliant movie encapsulating the Vietnam war and it's effect on the American public.

I've never heard of most of them. Ran sounds like an episode of Eastenders, feuding sons etc.

Stupid list, doesn't even have 'Full Metal Jacket'.

Full Metal Jacket is a bit problematic because the second half was not that great. No one matter hard you try you're never going to make Beckton Gas Works look like Vietnam.

Nice surprise to see Three Kings in there.

Tis a good film, it is not one of the greatest war films ever made.

Now if we were making a list of films were war went on behind the camera...

During the filming of 1999's Three Kings, Russell and Clooney went fisticuffs during a highly pressurized shoot, because Clooney thought that Russell was mistreating the crew and the extras. Russell called Clooney a "pussy", causing the verbal altercation to come to blows. Clooney later said that while he respected Russell's talent, he would never work with the director again

Kanal, Went the Day Well, Listen to Britain, Blimp

should be substituted for almost any four in that list
