General aviation/airplane news and chat

God, I'd feel like such a loser travelling in one of those "spacious business class standard" seats in the back. <goes back to browsing EasyJet flights>.
I wonder what it would look like after a little bit of turbulence..

From 2025 Qantas will fly non-stop in an A350-1000, taking ~20 hours.
Whereas few would yearn for the actual flying time required back in those days, the concept of breaking up such a long journey into a 2.5 day leisurely trip with two overnight stays at exciting cities along the way, rather than a three-hour refuelling stop along the way feels far more civilised to me. It’d probably reduce the jet lag effects a fair deal too.

For what I read on aviation forums, tge Project Sunrise nonstop flights will be significantly more pricey than the existing one stop routes. I guess they’ll be very popular with business & first class pax, but unlikely to be worth the price difference for those in economy for the sake of a few hours saved.

Still an amazing technological achievement though. And to think a few short decades ago the very prospect of crossing the Atlantic for a mere six hours on two engines was unthinkable…

The current non-stop to Perth (went to Darwin during The Plague) is more expensive than the one stoppers via the Middle East or Singapore, but you get on at Heathrow and 17 hours later walk off in Oz, for people wanting Perth as their final destination in my experience they are generally happy to pay for it, just yesterday I had a guy pay £8k for a biz seat next month and his daughter (in her mid-20’s) paid £2200 for an eco seat on it, the Qatar Airways option was £5k and £1.2k respectively, that happens regularly, although of course Perth, lovely as it is, isn’t a major destination, would imagine once Sydney comes on line it will be a very busy flight. And if they do the same with Melbourne that will be too, do far more to Melbourne than Sydney…

Did the tight fucker go Business and put his daughter in Economy?

I've done it twice it's definitely the best way to get the UK from Perth. You end up noticeably less fucked on arrival due to not having to arse about with a stop.

She is in her mid-20's and has to pay for herself, though naturally her credit card wouldn't work and had to use daddy's card, "I'll pay him back" - 'course you will...

But on that point, parents who fly up the front and stick their child age kids down the back, really shitty behaviour. Famously Gordon Ramsey and Kirstie Allsopp are proud to do so, so you know it's scummy business. BA has an actual published policy about it, as so many parents have done so and the kids have run amok, it says should that happen the parents will be downgraded, even if it means upgrading an economy passenger in to the parent's seat. So if you see a parent turning left and their child turning right, complain that the kid is playing up and get a free upgrade

I didn't find the stop-over too bad flying to Adelaide, because in Singapore at least you can get a hotel room in the airport for 4 hours, have a decent nap, have a shower, get changed and generally freshen up. It made it more bearable than another 7 hours of non-stop flight would be.

I’ve done business to NY with Mrs W on points with the teens in premium. They had a great time (and are lucky to get that).

Some time ago the airline that I worked for, GulfAir in Bahrain, ran a Boeing 747 route to New York with a refueling stop in Cyprus. My daughter was cabin crew on the 747 and I was on the Tristar mainly operating to the Far East. My wife was still in Cyprus awaiting a chance to join me in Bahrain so I took the opportunity to buy her a ticket from Larnaca to New York on a flight on which I knew our daughter was working. As she was boarding in Larnaca she was re-directed to first class, courtesy of the Captain.

She and my daughter had a really great couple of days together in the Big Apple before returning with the same crew, again first class. She was surprised to be invited up onto the flight deck for the final couple of hours as they flew down the Turkish coast approaching Cyprus and the Captain explained that this was a small thank-you to her husband (me) because I had trained him some years before.
