Forced/coerced adoptions under the former military regime in the R.o. Korea

Unaware of this, all coming to light during a commission of inquiry, absolutely appalling and as bad or worse as the cases in religious institutions elsewhere, grabbing people of the streets in a "beatification campaign." Says the 200,000 Koreans adopted abroad are the largest such diaspora, larger than China I presume that means which I always guessed would be the biggest cohort.:

From a follow on article:

“ The U.S., the pioneer of this [adoption] system and long the country to adopt the most foreign orphans, has not analyzed its own accountability [after several European countries banned the practice] and some have questioned why. The State Department said questions from AP over several months have prompted it to begin trying to piece together its history from archives. An early review found that widespread practices in South Korea at the time “may have resulted in adoptions based on falsified documentation” but no indication yet that U.S. officials were aware of it. “

Important to remember it was the US which instigated the start of this grotesque industry by pressuring Korea to send half-Korean half-American kids that were born of relationships between K-women and American GIs to the United States where they could ‘flourish’ in a more ‘ethnically mixed society’.
