For an elderly relative...

just a thought - there will probably be some sort of local organisation that's there to support carers - possibly run / facilitated by social services, or independent.

if absolutely nothing else, it's someone who understands to talk to when you're having a bad day. at best, they can help refer you to organisations who can help, provide advice on benefits (and things like home adaptation grants) and such. And may be able to advise on things like employment law if you're getting shit for taking time off at short notice (friend of mine recently got her local one involved when she was dealing with her elderly and ill mother.)

organisations like RNIB, Age UK and such tend to provide some sort of support and assistance to carers as well.

Which reminds me, we tended to concentrate on what RNIB can do, but may be (if i'm not stating the bleeding obvious) seeing if Age UK can offer any assistance / support / advice - they have a web page about home adaptions and such - here

Lots of good advice here, folks! Food for thought indeed. I need to have a frank conversation with my grandma, she was in tears today after spilling another half bottle of whisky and 2 litres of milk. She was more upset that I had to clean up her mess, go to the shop for her etc. I tell her I don't mind but she just feels a nuisance. Heartbreaking :(

just another thought - someone mentioned miniatures

could you get a few smaller bottles (miniature bottles may be right, but alternatives are probably available, and then you decant the whisky for her into whatever she considers a single shot at a time?

also, while getting milk in 2 litre bottles may be more cost effective, again, how about maybe keeping some single pint bottles and you transferring smaller amounts into each bottle?

and definitely one of those cradle things for the kettle. the consequences of fumbling a kettle with boiling water in it could be more than just messy.

If it were my choice I'd buy the smaller bottles, but a lifetime of penny pinching and thrift is hard to shift, saving money on bulk buying is more of a priority in her mind. It's why I'm going to start decanting liquids into multiple, smaller containers for her. Best of both worlds, saves her money and waste. And me hassle...
