Am I wrong in remembering you could do them in the toaster? Might have taken longer than toast.
Looking at articles about the new ones, they say they used to be cooked in the microwave, surely that can't be right?


I think that was something else - you’d be chancing them leaking out the fold in a toaster - Shallow frying or grilling was the way back then, frying got the golden colour/crispy best but grilling meant you got a detachable layer of breadcrumbs, then the “pancake“ (ie white carby substance) then filling.

I have a vague memory that late-on, they may have switched to a pre-coloured/larger crumb breadcrumb layer when microwaves became common because if you did the originals in the microwave, they looked really pale, floppy and unappetising but back then the newness of junk food cooked truly in seconds meant that some folk did anything, suitable for microwave or not - eg frozen burgers, which were utterly vile!
