Films you have seen at the cinema 2024

There's Still Tomorrow. Excellent black and white Italian film about a woman trying to find liberation from her violent tyrant of a husband, set in post WW2 Rome. Great acting and direction from Paola Cortellesi, beautifully shot and both moving and funny in parts. Highly recommended.

The Fall Guy. Totally implausible action nonsense. I thought it was great. Well acted from Gosling and Blunt, with the right balance of humour. Sometimes you just need a no brainer film and this was at the right time and place for me :D

Roadgames (1981). This was a quid and looked interesting. Apparently it’s one of Tarantino’s favourites but don’t let that put you off. Aussie new wave thriller, with a truckie pursuing a camper van across the country.

Was quite fun, reading the blurb about it afterwards it seems it was pitched as “rear window in a vehicle” and the protagonist develops the same obsessive streak. Coincidentally I had watched Rear Window earlier in the day.

Sounds like Duel - early (possibly his first) Spielberg film .

Just managed to catch this. Very much agree with you - quite a special film i think

Yep ! I enjoyed it ! Only seen 3 films at the cinema this year , two have been Lesbian crime capers , a genre I was previously unaware of .😅
Have you seen Bound? It’s the Wachowski Sibs debut - a crime/noir/romance thriller in which the two leads just happen to be two women in love/lust with each other. Their sexuality is barely mentioned, the plot doesn’t rely on it as an ‘issue’, and they have lots of fun and aren’t punished for it as is normal Hollywood tradition. And it was one of the first Hollywood films to use what they now call an ‘intimacy co-ordinator’ to ensure the actors felt comfortable during the shoot. But it’s still very rude and very very sexy.

Yep!

Love Lies Bleeding - Quite good fun, I don't think it totally worked but it was nice to get to the cinema after a really shit week at work. Harris and Stewart are good, especially together, I would liked to have seen more scenes with them playing off each other.

Saw Challengers tonight - my verdict was that it was pretty good. A watchable story of rivalry and competition, with some excellent cinematography. I particularly liked a minor detail, which was that of showing a tennis court from underneath, as if it was transparent, so you could see the ball landing.

My only gripe was that the sound of the ball being hit sounded wrong! And it's something you hear a lot in this film.

It's the weather! I've a free ticket for it -- and I'm a big P&P fan -- so will probably try and catch it this weekend.
I'm also a fan. However I'm not a fan of documentaries at the cinema. But like you I have a Mubi ticket. Hmmm.

Is it good?

The times/locations didn't work for me yesterday so will go and see it in the week. Instead I saw:

La Chimera. A sad and down at heel Josh O'Connor returns to Tuscany looking for his lost love and falls (back) in with a ragtag band of ruffians who rob Etruscan tombs of their treasures. Given O'Connor doesn't have much dialogue (and most of the dialogue he does have is in Italian), he does a great job with this. The film itself is quite random -- it's from Alice Rohrwacher who made Happy as Lazzaro a few years ago which I thought was really good -- and a bit confusing but I recommend sticking with it. Excellent.

(Also as per the other thread, I thought I might just about manage the 'only person in the cinema' thing -- and in the main screen too! -- until some spoilsports arrived during the trailers.)

It is a very well made and comprehensive documentary. If rather by the book - Scorcese sits in a cinema seat and talks directly to camera, intercut with scenes from various films, home movies and other documentaries. I've seen....maybe 10 of their films on the big screen, so it was good to see some of the ones I haven't real big. Thief of Baghdad really did look spectacular. Decent coverage of the later (less interesting) films and more Pressburger than is normally seen in such docs.

You won't really be missing much by waiting for it to come on to TV tho.

Can any London base urbs recommend any cinemas showing non mainstream as I’m in London next week for a bit and may try and squeeze in a few films subject to dog sitting commitments

Am staying in Wood Green (basically next to the cinema there but it’s not likely to show much I want to see)

Thanks :)

I need to go to the cinema again soon.

There’s a nice one. I can’t remember its name. It’s amazing. It’s round near UCL.

The Hackney Picturehouse is ok.

The Prince Charles:
If you can afford it, maybe The Curzon or The BFI on the South Bank
