Fat White Family & various offshoot bands (Moonlandingz, Insecure Men, Warmduscher, Pregoblin etc)

I've never been overly impressed by FWF on record but went to see them last night on the strength of their live reviews and I have to say that as a middle aged man who's seen my fair share of excellent bands in he past...they were bloody good. Why do they sound so meek on record and so angry and exciting live?

Based on the difference between their live and recorded sound I'd have to agree killer. Who produced their albums? I can't see how the band could come out of the studio and be happy with what they've recorded.

I got to say (er i may have said it before) that it was the first album that totally won me over, I didn't go see them live for some time after I heard it, and seeing them live definitely was a different and great experience, but it was the 1st album that hooked me.

I guess I like when albums and live are treated as 2 totally separate things. Some people like one, or the other, and some both. I have little doubt that that album will be looked back on as classic in 20 years time if people still have any concern with albums then tho.

I'd never heard of Fat White Family until I noticed this thread. Well, somehow I managed to endure watching some of their videos on You-tube and I have to say it was possibly the most dreary rubbish I have had the misfortune to experience.

Haha, they certainly seem to polarise opinion which to my mind means they're doing something right.

I've always thought that the only way you can really understand a band and where they're coming from is to see them live.

well... depends on the band really... I would probably not say you get the best understanding of say The Fall by seeing them live, as entertaining as it might occasionally be. Their records are the main thing.

Do you think? I haven't enjoyed any Fall records as much as the first time I saw them live.
maybe not theee best example. I think "proper" fall fans might agree tho? their live performance might be fun, but their albums are where the real essence is? But anyway there is definitely some bands whose recorded output is more significant to what they are than their live act.

weirdly, reading this little tangent, the first band that came to mind was the Sugarcubes. They were incredible live, especially early on but the records not so much first one is okay but after that...

Good example ouchmonkey. i remember seeing them at kilburn national years ago and they were wild.
Even bands you would argue are better on record still reveal something of themselves live that you can't capture on record.

Lady Gaga's a fan:

The 30-year-old star looked carefree and did away with her denim jacket, wearing just a black bra, jeans and boots while she danced in the elevated VIP section for much of the show. She also attentively filmed some of the songs on her iPhone.

“I f - - king love this band,” she told The Post while backstage in the venue’s dressing room. “I wanted to keep my cool look together, but once I heard that bass line, I had to take [my jacket] off and just rock. I’m not the kind of person who becomes a superfan easily, but with these guys I was feeling it.”

Gaga also took a minute to chat and take snaps with Saoudi and guitarist Saul Adamczewski. “When people watch you guys play, they rage hard, and it’s like they leave their bodies,” she told the guitarist approvingly.

The first album is great. The second is crap. Never thought they were special live though.
