It is good to finally have the voice of a generation posting on this board! You would have fitted right in the letters page of the NME circa 1993.
heh, that's actually true.

i believe that is FWF's second album title.
how about "rich pickings for a shaky hand"? or have i ruined it?i'll be needing 5%.
aww, sweet! i bet your friends love you!I know one guy who has just got really into The Cramps but has no quality control, so I'm worried he'll get into Fat White Family and I'll have to tell him they're shite.

I can't escape the feeling that there's something very calculated about FWF and their rebel image. Learning that the frontman used to be signed on a major label with a indie rock band does nothing to diminish that.
This is a dull conversation. they're a rock and roll group, either you get rock and roll or you don't. It doesn't have to be reinvent the wheel. It just needs to have a certain spirit and give you a certain feeling, that presses some peoples' buttons and not others.Point is, what do your pals do that hasn't been done by hundreds of other bands before?
well i can guarantee not that.if i find out they went to the Brit School i'm going to be really angry.
Why bother doing anything you enjoy? I think I watched telly yesterday.I'd like to think so too.
Point is, what do your pals do that hasn't been done by hundreds of other bands before?
What band did they break up?well i can guarantee not that.
imo the fact that one of them chose to break up a pretty successful indie pop band, blow all the money and burn bridges with labels and magazines, disappear for 5 years then come back with a disgusting band that plays noisy hideous uncommercial music (with a few exceptions) is proof of artistic integrity. there's no reason anyone needs to believe me on that, but i know personally. if they didnt have a (fairly recently acquired) manager putting them about i would easily believe they'd still be playing the same free gigs round the place as they were back at the start of this thread.
agreed. hunx put it all much better in the song i posted above. And seriously, let's put away talk of artistic integrity and the myth of the great artist garreted with their urge to produce art please.
Ha, having met them a couple of times I can personally guarantee this to not be the case.I can't escape the feeling that there's something very calculated about FWF and their rebel image.
although we are even far more rebellious than them having been banned from an entire city.Ha, having met them a couple of times I can personally guarantee this to not be the case.
why? Its not a myth - lots of people do thatAnd seriously, let's put away talk of artistic integrity and the myth of the great artist garreted with their urge to produce art please.
A fetishisation of the new and original for its own sake is just the flip side the sort of cultural conservatism that insists only old stuff has any value.
you have obviously spent a lot of time listening to them and decided you don't like them... obviously a lot of people disagree... both opinions are valid. let's move on. fyi the crowd at their london gigs is usually over 50% female, and not old on the whole, but a wide range.... not that that makes a difference to me, old guys often know a lot about really crazy noisy music, it is usually the youngsters who get tricked into liking shit like oasis and that.I agree to an extent, but the 'Fat Whites' aren't doing anything new and they're doing that badly. It's dad rock. If they were really the cacophonous, noisy garage rock band they're made out to be by some I might be able to enjoy them, original or not. But it's dull shite.

ah right well i was specifically only talking about in this thread in that instance, so that was a misunderstanding. But you brought age into it by implying that FWF it was only old guys slagging them off whilst "the kids" love them (that's how I read it anyway).
it is kind of against the spirit of rock and roll to put any of that into words tho... OMG IVE SAID TOO MUCH ALREADY!why? Its not a myth - lots of people do that
maybe not this lot, i couldnt say, but theres countless artists in music
sound like pretence to me. Oh yeah i forgot, rock and roll is true authenticity, there are absolutely no try-hards in guitar bands, its all effortless and pure that comes out whilst smoking a fag and scowling at the cornerit is kind of against the spirit of rock and roll to put any of that into words tho... OMG IVE SAID TOO MUCH ALREADY!
not really sure what your point is here. i suggest going and listening to some music that you like!sound like pretence to me. i like all kinds of guitar bands - my point is theres plenty of artists in all music, including rock and roll, and what i got from your post was that in order to be cool in rock and roll you have to pretend you're not doing that, as its against the spirit or something. A theoretical conversation here, nothing to do with this band.not really sure what your point is here. i suggest going and listening to some music that you like!
im not talking about you or this band. Never mind rutabowa, i was jsut tyring to understand/counter the claim butchers made, and your backing up of it. Lets leave it, its really not worth it. Im sure your band ishave you seen the actual band i'm in?
i am not sure that "effortless cool" is a description anyone would use of it. it is definitely rock and roll tho. in fact, i don't think "cool" is ever an adjective i would like to see rock and roll, contrary to popular opinion. your description of "effortless and pure that comes out whilst smoking a fag and scowling at the corner" sounds like much of what i hate about so-called rock music
