Fastest lap of the M25

I don’t think this is possible today, but apparently the fastest lap of the M25 was set at 45 minutes in the late 1980s in a modified Porsche 911. Today you would need fake number plates and an awful lot of luck to get under an hour.

The late 1980s was a different era, somethings worse than today, somethings better than today. Overall though progress is being made though. Society continues to move forward.

You wouldn't need fake numberplates. But do tell us why you think they'd be necessary. I could do with a laugh

It was just me, a Japanese saloon car, and The Very Best of Deacon Blue.
Tan string back driving gloves allow for a firm grip of the wheel, they must shave a few seconds off the overall time due to the increased efficiency.

They are designed using technology developed during the Apollo programme. In many ways though, completing a lap of the M25 within 45 minutes, is a far greater achievement than man landing a rocket on the moon.

No chance of this record being beaten, the M25 is far to busy these days.
Even at 21.00 last night it was at a stand still when I crossed over it.

Racing[edit]

The motorway has attracted unofficial, and illegal, motor racing. At the end of the 1980s, before the advent of automated speed enforcement devices, owners of supercars would meet at night at service stations such as South Mimms and conduct time trials.[113] Times below 1 hour were achieved – an average speed of over 117 mph (188 km/h), which included coming to a halt at the Dartford Tunnel road user charge payment booths.[114][115] The winner received champagne rather than money. The Enfield Gazette referred to an "M25 club", and posters appeared near the M25 advertising the "First London Cannonball Run".[113] The racing had mostly disappeared by the end of the 1980s after speed cameras were introduced.[116]"

I remember the Cannonball Run posters and being envious because in my early 20s I couldn't afford a car that could compete.

Fond memories of being in a girlfriend's mate's Maserati Bi-Turbo Spyder with the roof down flying round the M25 on a Saturday night on our way down to Chandler's Ford.
Two girls in the back laughing and screaming as we were touching 130/140.

Must have been around 1987/88.

Totally Irresponsible though, it has to be said.

It sounds terrifying and horrible.
