Failed consoles of yesteryear (pre-Playstation)

Yeah, one of these

I used to have one, the games that came with it were quite good actually.

Flimbo's quest, Microprose soccer and the almighty Fiendish Freddy's Big Top O' Fun :D

Incredibly, the C64 version of Terminator 2: Judgment Day was designed for the console, but was included on a cartridge that required the user to press a key to access the game, rendering it unplayable.

This wikipedia page is pretty good

One console which I think was tragically missing from the UK market was the PC Engine.

I was lucky enough to get a PC Engine GT Handheld when I went to Hong Kong in 1993, it cost about £45. I remember seeing places selling them for £250 in the UK.

Probably the best cross section of games available on any console at the time and much better graphics than either NES or Master System, arguably better than Megadrive graphics too.

I remember being fully prepared to buy the PC Engine purely because I could get one of the best versions of R-Type on it. As it is I got a second hand SNES with disk drive and 400 games off a mate of a mate. And R-type wasn't so bad on it. Kicked arse that little machine. I still miss NBA Jam.

:D :D

That's superb, I can't remember what games I had, I only had the games that came with it and one or 2 more but I can't remember what they were.

Microprose soccer was boss, i'm really reminiscing over it now, it was always fun to hammer Oman, I worked out that you from kick off you could move the ball 3 times (including the kick off itself) and the ball would be in the back of the net, poor old Oman would fall for it everytime :D

PC Engine was originally an 8bit system developed in 1987 by NEC, it was only ever released in North America and Japan.

It had some amazing games for it, including the most arcade perfect port of R-Type for the time.

Yeah it was available from the grey importers, I couldn't afford it in the end, it's R-type sure was the bollox (I was addicted to that game - me and a mate used to sneak into Las Vegas arcade in Wardour street every evening and cane it till we ran out of 10ps).

I vaguely remember playing Alien Breed 3D 1st person version on the Amiga CD32. The older Amiga CDTV looked cool at the time. At least in the shops it did.

There was a British handheld consol that failed in 2005. it lasted 6 months. The name escapes me. Might have had something to do with dodgy Russian businessmen as well.

PC Engine = Turbografx (sort of the turbografx was 16 bit I think, but still played the 8 bit games)
Games for which you can now get on the Wii Virtual Console including r-type I believe.
The r-type on the PC Engine was annoying though as it came in 2 cartridges released as separate games about a year apart. So r-type II was incredibly hard right from the beginning as you started with no weapons on level 5

ha i always thought i was the only one to have worked out that! i had it on spectrum though.

On Match Day, Spectrum. If you faced your own goal with the ball, you wouldn't get tackled.

There was a serious lack of decent AGA games out for the 1200 at the time, all of which were simply burnt on to CD and flogged as CD32 games.
Premier Manager, Sensible Soccer, Cannon Fodder, Settlers and Elite II were all I ever needed!

I think Cannon Fodder was remade as AGA. None of the others were though.

Thats my point really, all the best games were for the old pre-1200 chipset, so there wasn't really anything to show off the CD32.

I used to run them all on my Amiga 1200. I never had a 500.

Really? Damn I had that wrong for so long!

Yep. I've only ever known two people to own one (both from wealth off backgrounds) and it was a cool machine, basically an arcade machine in a box but waaaay out of my then price range.

Incidentally, the plastic casing design for the Atari Jaguar, now lives on as a dental camera

That is ridiculous!!! haha :D

Talking of the Amiga, I never forget when I first saw the intro to Shadow of the Beast 2...I thought it was the most amazing graphics I'd ever seen.

Aw, I miss my A1200!

((((amiga))))

Still got mine boxed up at my dad's place. Not been switched on for well over 10 years. Actually I think my A500 is still there as well.

I wanna play Moonstone or Mega la Mania now.

Yeah and those demo things. Remember Jesus on Es? Very impressive at the time.

The Gizmondo.

Opened a shop on Regent's St. Burned through all the money Tiger Electronics gave them on fast cars and dodgy accounting and sold about 4 units. The main bloke is banged up now for gun possesion and fraud.

The Nokia N-Gage didn't do too well either (though without the criminal element!)

Does anyone remember the Amstrad GX400? The Amstrad version of the C64G. I think it only had one game.
