When I was at school, one summer term we played softball rather than the usual cricket or athletic shite. It was fucking mint. No interest in ever watching baseball but playing it was great.

Baseball and softball are two different sports. Baseball's more or less impossible (and dangerous) to play unless you grew up playing it, but softball's a laugh, and unlike most sports both genders can compete equally.
