I'd be amazed if he had a British passport, or one of any other nation - it would surely have come out before now that he was a dual-national. I suppose though that he could have been given a passport by a friendly state, but that would be highly dubious.

It is more likely two active US passports (one normal, one diplomatic) and an expired US passport, but even then they are pretty strange things for them to seize as evidence. The only reasons I can think of for doing that would be that if they'd been obtained unlawfully (by some sort of fraud or as the result of corrupt behaviour), or for the record of stamps within them.

Maybe because he went to territories which are in conflict with each other? Some people who visit Israel and Arab states have two passports, because an Israel stamp in your passport can cause severe difficulties.
