England vs USA

In true revolutionary style, the underdog Americans came from behind and blasted the powerful Brits to a nail-biting 1-1 draw yesterday in one of the all-time great World Cup soccer battles.

Other British fans, some draped in the Union Jack, screamed, "En-Go-Land!"

To be fair, they were the better team for much of the game.

English players still seem to have trouble with the idea of keeping the ball.

It's quite simple, if the opposition doesn't have the ball they can't score a goal.

And scoring goals is the ultimate ambition, therefore......

They were the better team for 20 mins in the first half - during which time england scored. Other than that they weren't there.

Bayern Munich won the Champions League?

That's a very good point.

In many ways that was the most fascinating thing about that victory and there's no way to fully explain it in any kind of concise, pointed way.

It was a victory built on rigorous discipline and tactical acumen but the general argument still stands - if you deny the opposition possession, you also deny them the chance to score.

Last night England were better than they have been in the past but there was still a tendency towards the hare-brained dash that has too often been there undoing.

They need someone in the middle with a bit of nous and influence to go with it. In other words, someone like Barry...

Until he's fit we don't stand a chance.

Even a draw against England would constitute a good result for teams like the US,see how they celebrated at the end, almost as if they hada won the match :D
Both Dempsey and Donovan seemed to suggest they were actually a little disappointed, felt if they'd played more to their potential they could have got more from the game.

Apparently after he came out he said something along the lines of "Well I think there's no serious question of me taking performance enhancing drugs tonight" :D

might have taken a back hander though.
tbf it happens to all the best keepers at some point - just a shit time for it to happen to him.

Can anyone answer me this: when Johnson went off for 2 mins to stop his lip from bleeding, england started passing the ball round, keeping formation, etc, in order to keep possession while they were down to ten men. for a moment there they looked like a professional national football team.

why dont england play like this normally - the tactic seems to be headless chickens acting with a sense of desperation at every moment - wheres the coolness and wheres the possession? they can clearly do it if they want to - why isnt this the norm? its not just this squad, its always like this with england

Exactly what I said earlier.
That pissed me off actually - if we're able to switch it on like that so easily, why the fuck don't we do it more often?! I think it's good to pass it round a while, settle things down, dominate, frustrate the opposition and wait for a good opportunity. All too often we seem to just pump it up the field (either in the air or along the ground) and hope someone will do something decent with it. We shouldn't be relying on hoping!!
Bloody frustrating

This is exactly why the game hasn't taken off in the States. Who ever heard of holding a sporting event and calling it done while it's a tie game? It's like saying "never mind, then."

Nah, the reason it hasn't taken off in the US is cause they're too busy with their own sports, and calling their finals 'world series' even though the rest of the world couldn't give a shit and its mainly just american teams.

Heh, this comment reminds me of the time that the WC was in the US and some of the TV networks started asking things like can it be in quarters, can each goal score more than one point because Americans 'wouldn't understand' such a low scoring sport.

Tells us more about the US and it's culture than the rest of the world who play it, really.
