England vs USA

:D true tommers, true :D

it must be painful to watch a game a crap as last nights, and realise that your team is even worse than that :D

Love it, time to try no 7 perhaps?

Why are you such a self-hater?

I'm not one of the people claiming that England were useless. That's because I'm a realist. I don't expect England football teams to win every game five nil because I don't simply swallow the Premier League's hype, because I watch football matches that don't involve any Arsenal, Chelsea, or Man Utd players, because I don't think patriotism involves thinking you are perfect and everyone else is crap.

Incidentally, England became European U17 Champions a few weeks back, after a tournament in which they won every game they played in qualifying and in the finals. Was that all over the back pages of the papers? Was it on the TV news? Did most English footie fans even notice? Are we football crazy? Are we fuck.

I don't buy this England were shit thing at all. If you think that you probably haven't seen any really shit England performances, or wiped them from your memory! The passing was pretty competent compared to a lot of performances. And it's not as if the USA are San Marino.

Obviously the defence is a bit of a worry in that any decent nippy strikers will skin them alive. Still haven't seen anything to convince me SWP should be in the team. Put Joe Cole on the left.

Sorry, not being a 'hardcore' football fan, I guess i just don't understand this rather odd brand of pesamistic dick waving that seems manditory to engage in no matter what happens on the pitch.
Quite glad about it to.
Oh, and go for it , I know that I must be sneered at now - it's fine.
:)

Basically, he's talking shite because we didn't win.

When people start throwing around works like "passion" in reference to the national team you can pretty much mark them down as know-nothing blowhards.

while generally content with what was the first game of a tournament - plus given injuries, etc, - I was quite interested in Rooney, who didn't seem to find any space at all and went shopping as far as the touchlines and, while we were in possession, his own half. Not exactly a Man Utd type performance but I suppose you have to give a lot of credit to the Yanks organisation. Be interested to see how that works out next time.

yes definitely, like lennon there usually seemed to be two players on him.

since all and sundry were banging on about what rooney would do if he got frustrated it was good to see he just got on with it.

Yeah, the Americans had done their homework* and did their job well.

*although how much homework is needed to know Rooney is a threat :hmm:

A disappointing performance, capped by Green's howler, but there's no need for panic. A lot of my mates are moaning about how rubbish the USA are, and I have to keep reminding them that they beat a more-or-less full-strength Spain in the Confederations Cup and were 2-0 up against Brazil in the final. They're well organised and are no mugs. I always expected this to be a tight game and at least we didn't lose.

There is a lot for Capello to ponder before the Algeria game but we have more firepower than the USA and should manage more goals than them in the remaining two games, assuming that they all go to form.

Agree. The USA are no longer the push overs of yesteryear - they're up there with sweden in the arkward squad. A win would have been a very good result - a draw is OK. However all the football no-nothings are rending their shirts and howling doom and gloom whilst the ABE's are gloating.

England were not shit - they were average. They will almost certainly get better. Its unlikely they will win the world cup - but they the potenial to be semi-finalists. The USA might make the quarter finals.

But to do a job on Rooney leaves space elsewhere.
which is where the falacy of the argument in support of heskey kicks in.

fuck all point leaving space elsewhere, when that space is occupied by heskey who poses virtually no threat of actually scoring a goal himself.

take rooney out of the equation while heskey is playing and you effectively take out our entire strike force being as heskey's only real role is to create space / hold the ball up for rooney.

but then apparently I don't understand the game, and somehow having a none scoring striker leading your attack is a great strategy.;)

Whilst not completely disagreeing, Rooney and Heskey aren't the only ones who can utilise the space created, and a striker's job isn't all about scoring goals. Once more, if the team scores more goals with a certain player in the team, why does it matter how many that individual scores?
