Emergency! Emergency! Will you get the alert?

So it'll be no use come the alien invasion if they're warning the aliens too.

I have tracked down the model in question, it was an early 1970s one with giant lights either side.

The alarm sounds right near the end of this video (at about 7 minutes 39 seconds), though frankly the boiling sounds were usually loud enough to wake everyone well before the alarm.

By the way my phone was an iphone, on O2 and if anything the alert arrived slightly early, some seconds before the clock on the phone hit 3pm.

TBF I used to fantasise about getting a goblin in my bedroom in the late 1970s...

I turned it off on our phones here, I was quite anxious about having a loud noise going on due to my sensory issues.

Tbf, if a nuke was about to land on me I honestly feel like I would rather not know what was about to happen, rather than spend my last few minutes in terror.

It wasn't as loud as i was expecting it to be.

A nuke might be a bit noisy though :hmm:

Fuck-all happened here alerts-wise. No noise, no text, no notification, nothing. My phone's an ancient Huawei Kestrel running some decrepit version of Android. Network is EE. Device was switched on and fully charged at the time. I'm pretty sure my phone doesn't even have the option to turn off such alerts, I'm sure that I would have seen something like that during all the times I've had to dig through my phone's settings for various reasons over the years.

Genuinely annoyed at that, actually. Contrary to the nightmares of traumatised Cold War babies, there are plenty of potential disasters that might warrant the use of the warning system that don't involve being incinerated mere minutes later. Shit like that needs to actually work.

The alert system uses the software on your phone.

It can't work if your phone doesn't support the software.

They could send a text instead but that wouldn't be the same test.

Well that's fucking stupid. Pretty much anyone with a functioning mobile phone can receive a text, even those Nokia bricks favoured by drug dealers. Why the fuck would they use some alert system that doesn't even have as much reach as SMS? I bet some private company got a fat juicy contract for that software. Useless fucking dicks.

I was dosing in bed nominally watching BBC News on the phone when the alert came in, it woke me from my slumbers. When I had worked out what it was I touched the OK button and it was gone leaving no trace as far as I can see.

Not very exciting.

Because it made a loud noise and because it takes ages to send 90 million text messages.

Still whatever you think is right eh.

You need andriod 11 minimum. Athough if you can't see an option to turn off the alerts then it's almost certainly not compatible. Also your phone, sim and tariff all need to be on 4g or 5g for it to work. 3g and 2g don't work although they are due to close down soon anyway. 3g actually closes before 2g.

As a system for alerting the general population, this test has proven it to be an abject failure. That's not a matter of my opinion, that's been objectively demonstrated.

They tested it so they can work on it, plus the percentage of people that will have phones capable will be higher next time.

But whatever.

It's an ETSI international standard. It can be configured for different base stations (Masts) and so areas. I think that there is an ETSI standard for broadcast 'traditional' SMS but it's too clunky for real world use. I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me will be along with more details.

(I only went to ETSI's HQ once, it's lovely just outside Nice with a view to the Alps from the canteen. Wish I'd been more...)
