Electric scooters

I'd chuffing well love it if the majority of cars were replaced by scooters but around where I live they're just adding to the traffic on the roads/pavements.

And while I like the idea of tootling along on one, they'd probably only really replace walking for me, and that's not a good thing.

I'd also be in constant fear of having it nicked/being pushed off as my area has more than its fare share of ruffians. Or is there some sort of clever tech that can prevent people riding stolen scooters?

Edit - 'not really' is the answer

It’s to make sure they are insured. There isn’t a licence so there’s no way of checking if private owners have insurance. However government can compel hire companies to insure their scooters.

They only go 15mph, so similar to bikes and whilst it is prudent to be insured on a bike, that’s not mandatory...

A sensible argument would be that we've decades of experience with bikes that had informed us that the risks involved with cycling are not so high as to require insurance, but escooters are new so let's trial them in a fully insured environment and see what the risks are like.

Logic says the answer will be a no shit, Sherlock situation but having actual data is always good to support logical inferences.

One e-scooter rider being a twat on a pavement today. Heading directly towards me - going fast, seems to think its okay to pass with a couple inches to spare.. I can see these things becoming more of a problem on pavements in future.

I can see them being used as a tool for stealing phones and such.

I've been quite hostile on this thread about them. It's not that they shouldn't be legalised it's just that there are all the same issues with cycle safety with a load of new users never having cycled in traffic. Doing your cycle proficiency test teaches you alot. These are issues that need to be addressed for both the public and users.

I was very nearly run down by an E-scooter in the City, it really got to me if i'm honest. I guess the guy riding it just thought his footprint could just slip through a crowd of pedestrians.

People do close passes to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists whilst driving a car regardless of the fact you have to have a license tbqfh

I know it would be politically unviable for any of the major parties due to its cost and opposition from most members of the public, but personally I’d love to see everyone to have a mandatory civil liability insurance regardless of whether they are in four wheels, two wheels, four little wheels attached to a skateboard, or two legs for that matter.

In Ze Fatherland right now and they are fucking everywhere. All legal, rental ones all over the shop. Not seen any of the doom-merchants predictions of small wheels leading to carnage yet...

Oh, and everyone riding them is smiling.

I am off to Brockwell Park shortly. 4 mile journey with some hillage. Ideal scooter task. 30 mins each way. It would be 70 mins on a P5.

This is the future. Already car users are giving more space and consideration. Scooter users smile. Have you noticed that?

Not around here they don't. In fact, they often shout for people to get out of the way when they're riding on the pavement.

Thing is, I want to be all for this bright scooter future and I can see how it works for you, but it's increasingly hard to stay positive when all around my neighbourhood there's kids being fucking arseholes on them: a few days ago I had to step into the fucking road because a group of kids came up behind me on a narrow bit of pavement in Coldharbour Lane, FFS.

So. yes I want this electronic scooter future. Totally behind the idea. But without piss-taking arseholes please.

Perhaps the roads are more than usually crap hereabouts but whenever I see electric scooters they are being driven on the pavement not on the road.Probably been said before and I haven't yet bought one but it seems likely that the tiny wheels are only compatible with the relatively smooth surface of pavements.
