Edinburgh or Stirling

I am expecting to start a job in Stirling shortly.

Any thoughts / info to help me decide between the following in terms of (rented) accommodation and commute?

1. Live in Stirling (apartment or house).
2. Live within 30mins of Stirling (probably a cottage).
3. Live in central Edinburgh and commute.

Thank you,

Alan ..........

Well it will be cheaper to rent and travel the closer you are to Stirling but if it's a lucrative job then maybe that doesn't matter.

Do you want the night life of Edinburgh?

Stirling is nice. I like it there, but danny la rouge is as close as we have to an expert on the area :)
Edinburgh is hideously expensive these days, I don't understand why anyone would live there but commute to Stirling tbh.

Why did you think Edinburgh to Stirling is worth doing? Is there anything in the capital that won't be in Stirling?

I knew a few people who commuted by train from Edinburgh to Stirling and apparently it's not too bad - you are travelling in the opposite direction to the majority after all.

Anecdotally, Stirling isn't as cheap as it might be for rentals, the university effect I think. Maybe look at one of the villages along the Hillfoots if you are looking local to Stirling? The scenery is nice there.

My reason for thinking about Edinburgh is that I worked two 9 month stints there before and really enjoyed it. Rented a flat in quartermile, though the price seems to have gone up from £800pm to £1,150pm in 4 years. I'll be refereeing rugby at weekends and Edinburgh might be a better base for that.

There are pros and cons, so I'm trying to get some info/views so that I can balance them up.

Any more thoughts?

If you are looking at about a grand a month rent then you can get some great places. Here's one near Dollar (if you have a motor that's less than an hour to Edinburgh, half that to Stirling)

(As an aside, I've rigged lights and decks in the big room in that flat when Dollarbeg House was getting decrepit. It was never derelict, but some of the rooms nearby, and particularly upstairs, didn't have floorboards. Good times)

Really depends. For the rental you're looking at, you can have your pick of many good properties around the central belt.

Update:

Started job last week and been looking around. Can't find many properties of interest, but hope to see the one the Claw mentioned this week.

I have been driving around looking at towns / villages and currently favour:

Bridge of Allan
Stirling King Park area
Dollar
Dunblane (though I didn't like the town centre)
Places near Gleneagles

Bah, hit Post by accident. Living near work is awesome. It means you're less at the whims of fate. It means an extra 30 mins in bed in the morning. It means you can pop home for lunch. It means so many good things.
