Three hours in Edinburgh...

To simplify my position.

Given a choice I'd never move to Scotland, it's too grey and cold. In my experience, Glasgow is much more pleasant and friendly than is Edinburgh.

It is, however, a nice enough place to visit.

I love Brighton and did a year of uni there but unless you’re seriously topping up the student finance, I wouldn’t recommend it for study.
It was amazing fun, loads to do and all that but crazy expensive, easily as expensive to live as london but with no London weighting.

Wrong thread? Or you're just trying to talk about cities that have markedly better weather than Edinburgh to rub it in...?;)

I’m responding to the conversation about unis and the choice between Dundee and Brighton. I was actually trying to make the point that Dessiato is talking absolute bollocks because they don’t like cold weather. Clearly I failed.

That's a bit of a sweeping stereotype :D. Given you're moving near there soonish, might be an idea to try and find the positives a bit more, eh? (And coming out with stuff like that isn't going to go down very well.)
My wife is from Edinburgh. We talked about how she felt about it, and moving back there. She said given a choice firstly she wouldn't go back at all, secondly, being forced to return to Scotland she'd prefer Glasgow.

Admittedly it's a few years ago, I contributed to a Sunday Times article on the resurgence of anti-English racism in Scotland. The thing that stood out then, and continues, is that Edinburgh is something of a hotspot for this.

Positives? Mooring a boat is cheaper. Otherwise, for me, there are none.

If you are sure I'm wrong, change my mind, show me I'm wrong.

Nah, cos I don't really think it'd matter what I say and of course you're entitled to your opinion. But being so negative about it when you're moving there doesn't seem great. There must be some other positives and focusing on them might help you feel a bit better about it?

Eta Huge international arts festival with lots of stuff going on. Beautiful scenery. Good beer. Those are positives surely?

Oh I see, sorry, wasn't following that bit of the conversation. All I know is that the Edinburgh 'summer' - I use that term in the loosest possible sense of the word - of 2001 defeated me and I ran crying back to London.

No. There's nothing. I'd always planned from my early teens to live and eventually die in France. But I fell in love with Spain. I decided that this is me, how I feel, how I like to live, I feel connected here. So much so that I'm applying for citizenship ASAP. But instead, I'm having to move to East Lothian. And losing everything that makes my life worth living.

i'm sorry i haven't followed this with the assiduity it deserves, but if you are successful in your application for spanish citizenship wouldn't you be able to stay in spain?

I already have residencia permante, that is not the reason I'm leaving. It is for deeply personal reasons.

Sorry to hear you are swapping the jamon for haggis against your will. I'm sure you'll find some good people to make up for it. And the whisky is better.

Sorry you feel like this dess. I grew up in East Lothian. It might not be Spain but it has a lot to recommend it if you like the outdoors, walking/cycling/watersport, history/castles, that kind of stuff. Try not to write it off as a hideous arse end of frozen nowhere because it's not.

It’s true that the East is colder than the West, but it’s also drier.

I don’t particularly remember 2001, and I didn’t spend it in Edinburgh, but I wore shorts for 4 months this year. It was warm.
