Donald Trump, the road that might not lead to the White House!

I suspect he'd be brought into line by capital, same as all the others.

Remember he IS capital. His interests and policies in office wouldn't be any different. In fact, the only difference I see is that he might favor capital even more than they are now.

Looks like Cruz beat (or is going to beat) Trump in Iowa (62% reporting, Cruz 28.3%, Trump 25%).

I'm fascinated to see how Trump deals with it. He usually denies losing or failing and calls everyone liars, but he can't do that with caucus results (or maybe he'll have a Cheney meltdown :D - I watched that live (I got Fox News at the time, I kinda miss it), it was amazing).

Will he give up and go straight for an independent run, or drop out altogether, to avoid serial embarrassment? Or will he declare it a blip and carry on steadfast in his assurance that he's amazing and everyone loves him? Will he blame Megyn Kelly for forcing him out of the Iowa debate? :D

In related news, Hillary leading Bernie by about a percent, 70-some% declared.

Just saw this:

:D

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump told the crowd gathered at his campaign rally on Monday to "knock the crap" out of anybody who threw a tomato at him.

Trump said the event's security staff told him there was a risk people would throw the juicy fruit.

"So if you see somebody getting ready to throw a tomato, knock the crap out of them," Trump said at his rally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

"I will pay for the legal fees. I promise," he added. "They won’t be so much because the courts agree with us too."

Trump To Crowd: 'Knock The Crap Out Of' Tomato Throwers, I'll Cover Legal Fees

Cruz is just as bad if not worse than Trump he just toes the line on foreign policy and privatisation so he gets a relative pass from meeja

Cruz is frightening. An extremist christian fundi who wants to turn back the clock. This stuff plays well among evangelicals in the Rebub base but I can't see how he can win the general election with it.

The smart money has been on Rubio for some time, is my understanding.

I've been saying it on here for a month now. The republican establishment can't stand Cruz. I suspect he will start picking up endorsements and support from other candidates as they drop.?

Surprised the Trump didn't win, and that Cruz did, looks like a 3 horse race atm, I think it'll end up between Trump and Rubio, Cruz is too toxic for a lot of Republicans. Can't see any of them beating Hilary though, against Sanders they might have a chance (I'd love Sanders to be president tbf)

All the polling (I know, I know) suggests Sanders would do better against Trump, not sure about the others.

Someone looks pleased with himself:

It's an outstanding result for pretty boy. I can see him picking up most or all of Bush's support, as well as Kasich, Christie and some of the Randites. That would give him equal footing, but then Carson's base will split for Cruz and Trump.

Side note, Steve King, Iowa's Senior US Senator and a Cruz backer, announced that Carson was done, and that's apparently the word the Cruz campaign were putting out. Carson has said he's going to holiday in Florida (can't blame him, Iowa winters are fucking brutal), which seems a bit odd. Whole thing isn't quite right.

ETA: Carson's statement was that he was going home to get fresh clothes. He has dick all chance in NH anyway so he'll probably get a little face time there and move straight on.

Yes the fresh clothes thing was funny. Either his suitcase was too small or they don't have laundromats in Iowa :D

And yes, the Carson is done thing was an email/sms going out from the Cruz camp, saying that Carson was handing in the towel and his supporters should rally behind Cruz instead. Pretty dodgy stuff!

Is it? I thought it was pretty standard practise

Only if he was throwing in the towel, surely? He wasn't.

Also, something being done often doesn't make it not dodgy!

He's apologised now:

Ted Cruz said:
“When CNN reported and put up a post that Carson was not continuing on to New Hampshire and was not continuing on to South Carolina, but instead was flying home to Florida, our political team forwarded that story to our supporters,” Cruz told radio host Jeff Kuhner.

“The Carson campaign put out a statement, clarifying that he was not suspending his campaign, and the team did not forward that statement to the supporters as well. That was a mistake. It was mistake for us not to have forwarded the second statement as well. And I apologize to Ben for our not forwarding that second statement.”
