Wrt the trump petition. Does anyone remember the 2004 election where the guardian targeted one county in ohio and ask its readers to write to the electorate there to patiently explain why they should vote Kerry:

What upset Ohio was the contempt the exercise had for sovereignty. The UK parliament debating whether a foreign national access to the UK because a large number of electors have called for it, is a different matter.

Yes, no one who supports Trump is going to change their mind because of it. Some may increase their support and some who are sympathetic but not outright supporters might start to decide to support him.

The reason not to do it has to do with a wider point about state power to decide whose views are acceptable in visitors to this country. tbh this debate, followed by a decision not to do anything, will have a sum total effect of fuck all in the States.

They have a history of lending aircraft to the tories and I think they did during the election for campaigning. Could be a story in there somewhere.
