The difference is, for you and others, the election is an intellectual talking point. For Americans, it's the shape of their future.

Even here in Canada, there are effects. There are Americans within my extended family; and as a result of this election, there are people who will no longer speak to one another.

What has happened is more than just an intellectual exercise.

If he implements many of the policies that he has said he will, then we will see more excess deaths from preventable causes in the US. At this point I don't see anything that will stop him. The excess deaths from lack of access to medical care, prior to Obamacare, was multiple times the death toll of 9/11 per year.

I have to say, I've been reading various things about how many Trump supporters aren't out-and-out racist and this was as much a desperate response to the abandonment and decay of large swathes of America (such as this from Cracked), but holy fuck, even if that's true this is something else.

I said yesterday, at least at the start it's not so much Trump I'm worried about, it's these kind of supporters. Just like Brexit, they feel their beliefs have been vindicated.

The more interesting thing I haven't looked into today is voter registration in places like Florida. In Bush v Gore, Bush won not because of the hanging chads but because large numbers of black voters were excluded, by 'voter purging', disenfranchising felons etc. Not sure of how much of that is still in place in Florida or other states.
