The other facet of of focussing on class, that no one seems to have mentioned overtly but that lies behind a lot of what we are arguing about, is that we can organise on the basis of class and that class-based organisation has the power to change society in ways that identity based organising does not.
Huh? BLM? Feminism? LGBT activism?
Who's "we"?

Surely better that the two work together.

Certainly. And that is exactly the thing I would be advocating - building coalitions between groups in ways that stress the commonality of goals. If I'm white and you're black, there needs to be nothing, absolutely nothing, about a political programme that is good for you that is not also good for me. Your struggle is my struggle.

There's a long way to go in the US to build such movements, and there is stuff in the way - affirmative action, for instance, which is a response to inequality and unfairness that also causes division. For instance, instead of giving grants only to black kids to get into college, you need a system in which everyone can get into college. You need socialism, basically.

But that doesn't change the need to go beyond that to work out what's going on. And I'm under no illusions as to the difficulty of advocating socialism in the US. It's hard enough advocating it here.

My brother in law has gone full Bretbart and is now spouting on about those James O Keefe videos that claims democrats incite violence at Trump rallies.

I'm going to have to skip christmas dinner.

Millions upon millions of US citizens are on food stamps, of all ethnicities, how does identity politics help them?
The vox article wasn't about 'identity politics' it was about resentment and loss of status in the established order and how that erupts into racial violence. I think you're in danger of missing the obvious fact that trump played 'identity politics' brilliantly .

I wouldn't have voted for Trump but I couldn't resist having £5 on him - 5/1 odds in a 2 horse race when we all by now know that the opinion polls are shite was too good to refuse. I'd have felt too guilty to have won more than my £25 on him though. Honest.

No, you're going to have to kill your brother-in-law.

"It's for your own good" you can shout, as you batter him insensible with the roast turkey.

Who cares?
The Simpsons clip mentions him as previous president ...doh.....

:D

Are you seriously being abusive about a fucking comment on a cartoon

You could just let it fucking go.

Your entire premise was "OMG TEH SIMPSONS PREDICTED IT" when you didn't know at the time of the 1st episode he'd already staged an unsuccessful presidential bid. So it's literally the OPPOSITE of a prediction.

I'm already on thin ice with my in-laws and fear this will push me over the edge.

He accused me of being a hypocrite for not condemning the millions of people rioting in the streets of America and the wave of anti white violence that has swept the country since Trump took power.

Go to Xmas dinner dressed as a Black panther. Give him a big speech about Irish solidarity with the African-American struggle. Get your wife to dress as Bernadette Devlin.

This theme has been going on for a long time now - e.g. violence against women, "but it happens just as much to men toooo". It points towards a worldview that enables Trump but it's by no means unique to him.

No it's not, it's just I don't fancy sitting around the table for 2 hours with someone who thinks that way.
