Donald Trump the road that might not lead to the White House - Redux 2024 thread.

So if the conviction holds. There is nothing in the US constitution that stops a convicted felon for running for president!? As I understand it. Crazy times we live in.

That is a good thing though. Barring someone from running for office because of a 'crime' gets you into dictatorship territory which is how you end up with the likes of Putin. That's the kind of power Trump dreams of.

Yep, I don't think there's any British law banning somebody with a felony conviction from becoming prime minister - according to the Unlock charity, you can only be disqualified from becoming an MP if you have been sentenced to a year or more in prison and are still in prison serving that sentence

Unfortunately that’s moot anyway, because those powerful enough to get into a position to run this country are the sort that are law-proof, they know the judges and prosecutors from school/the Garrick or wherever.

Technically, the British government does have something in place to prevent this and it was brought in after Bobby Sands became an MP. But they'd need to be imprisoned for over a year for it to come into effect.

I suppose I'm coming at it from the fact I need a DBS to do my job and that im fairly sure having a conviction like this would make it very hard for me to get a job. Lots of jobs require DBS, must be similar in US.. but not for politicians

Though from what I understand, the Prime Minister doesn't need to be an MP (e.g. Alec Douglas-Home), so we could theoretically have a Prime Minister who was in prison at the time they were in office.
The above Act only covers people currently detained - if you were previously convicted you could still become an MP as long as you weren't in prison at the time.

The largely unwritten constitution has traditions etc, but pretty much anyone can become leader of a party, and thus become Prime Minister, without ever being an MP or Lord.

To me, being a felon and eligible for office is not nearly as big of a deal as the sitting US President being able to appoint their preferred Supreme Court Justices for life, just on the off chance they happen to luck out and one or more of the existing Justices dies or retires during their presidency.

Unless an unfriendly Senate refuses to play ball, of course.

Is Robert F Kennedy planning a Connor Roy? He’s joining in with the stuff about Trump being stitched up by corrupt Democrats. Don’t see how that benefits him unless he wants an ambassadorship in return for a last minute endorsement.

But anyhow, a unanimous decision on all counts .. quite a result for the Orange one ..

Hopefully sentencing will be swift and painful.

Her services were legitimate. She was paid for her story. It's Trump that's accused of doing something unlawful.
You missed the point, I wasn't inferring she had done any illegal, i was saying that Trump wouldn't be able to prove that her services were a legitimate business expense as that is the case against him.

Interesting article about the unconventional strategy the DA used against all advice

good for Bragg. he's the George Soros of NYC: the whipping boy behind everythiung that's bad, responsible for the "tidal wave of crime" (crime rates have gone down significantly). already last night i saw it on my Nextdoor, "I am not a Republican (yeh, right) but why is everybody praising Bragg when he's letting all these criminals out of prison to assault us?" it's bullshit, they're just angry that he got criminal #1.

As pleased as I am to see a conviction, I still think it will be overturned on appeal. If nothing else, the Supreme Court will take it up and quash it.
