Donald Trump - MAGAtwat news and discussion

Idiot or not he's made it quite clear what the direction of travel is - the US using its economic and military power to get what it wants - and at the expense of traditional allies rather than rogue states. It may well not work economically. But I don't think that means it won't be tried. There isn't some magic authority that's going to step in and prevent it. The only hope really is Republican opposition but I think it's unlikely. Those poeple won't want to put a target on their backs.
If it doesn’t work economically then the US is fucked and so are we. If trump ignores the economic impact of his adventures, he will be more than the worst US President ever. Putting a target on their backs won’t even matter in the downfall. He may have all sorts of plans but ignore the effect on the economy and he’s more a fool than many think.

I'm sorry, I'm still very far behind: why the fuck is he even interested in Greenland anyway?!

Is there any kind of historical link? Is Greenland actually just the convenient catalyst for some larger objective?
The US occupied Greenland during WW2 while Denmark was occupied by the Nazis. That's the only real link.

As to the legitimacy of claims, we're on shaky ground here regarding Denmark's claim. It is based on historical military might and subjugation of the people already living there. It is a classic example of a colony really, and if Greenlanders wanted independence, there isn't any good argument Denmark could make to oppose it.

We need to hear first and foremost from the people of Greenland here. Being realistic, a nation of 60,000 people in a strategically important area (not to mention the possible mineral wealth as the ice cap slides into the sea) is never going to be genuinely independent. They need to decide whether they want to be dominated by Denmark or dominated by the US, essentially.

Maybe it's because it looks really bigly on the map, if someone explained to him that it's much smaller than it looks then he might not be so enamoured.

I agree with those who say that it should be up to the inhabitants, which is the standard that should be followed in all regions of the world where there's a dispute between governments.

Don't underestimate the resources available to the USA and its director's survival instincts. Trump is being allowed his glory now but as soon as his shit takes the USA on a downward trajectory he will be got rid of, the USA wont allow itself to be fucked

....Why? Absolute insanity:

That story about Salt Typhoon and the Chinese hacks of US tech infrastructure stinks.

From a few weeks ago.

One of the things that happened is the Chinese gained access to networks, essentially had broad and full access. That’s why they’ve been able — we believe that’s why they had the capability to geolocate millions of individuals, to record phone calls at will, because they had that broad access.

How Chinese Hackers Graduated From Clumsy Corporate Thieves to Military Weapons
WSJ. Jan. 4, 2025 https://archive.ph/kd7Bp
The message from President Biden’s national security adviser was startling.

Chinese hackers had gained the ability to shut down dozens of U.S. ports, power grids and other infrastructure targets at will, Jake Sullivan told telecommunications and technology executives at a secret meeting at the White House in the fall of 2023, according to people familiar with it. The attack could threaten lives, and the government needed the companies’ help to root out the intruders.
What no one at the briefing knew, including Sullivan: China’s hackers were already working their way deep inside U.S. telecom networks, too.

The two massive hacking operations have upended the West’s understanding of what Beijing wants, while revealing the astonishing skill level and stealth of its keyboard warriors—once seen as the cyber equivalent of noisy, drunken burglars.
From national emergency to disbanding in a few weeks change of administration?

Trump has disbanded The Federal School Safety Clearinghouse External Advisory Board,
that works to prevent school shootings. How much more of a cunt does he have to be
before he loses his supporters, or are they so fucking hateful, or stupid, that he'll not lose them?

I don't think Trump mentioned his plan to resume sending 2,000-pound bombs to Israel, or his proposal to "clean out" Gaza and send its residents elsewhere, while he was reaching out to Arab American voters

“I’d rather get involved with some of the Arab nations and build housing at a different location where they can maybe live in peace for a change,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One.

“You’re talking about probably a million and a half people, and we just clean out that whole thing and say: ‘You know, it’s over.’”

Trump probably agrees with the NRA's answer to school shootings which is to arm the teachers so that they can shoot first.

How is he going to take Greenland if Denmark doesn't agree? By sending in the troops - probably not even that many - and taking it, that's how!

What consequences are there for him of becoming a 'rogue country '?

You are still living in a world where the US abides by a set of norms. That appears to be over.
It never has. Always fought against the ICC, refuses allied country’s jurisdictions when US troops have gone rogue there, doesn’t give a fuck about what the UN does or says on wars, climate change, Israeli aggression etc. Invaded other countries and interfered in democratic processes. It’s been a rogue state for decades, just ‘one of ours’.

Agreed. But abiding by norms when it came to dealing with the 'western' world in the main.

Apparently the UK has first refusal on any fire sale of Greenland lol, can we Gazump Trump? :p

Tom Høyem, Denmark’s representative to Greenland between 1982 and 1987, also said that if Denmark were to sell Greenland, it would have to give the UK first refusal under the 1917 agreement.

The British government at that time demanded it should have the first right to buy Greenland, because of the island’s proximity to Canada, then a British dominion.

Donald Trump says residents of Greenland want to be part of US
