Donald Trump - MAGAtwat news and discussion

“They” are those who have the power to stand up to him. Denmark is part of the EU and Europe. People kissing his ring and bending over to kiss his arse especially in the US is not the way to deal with him. Stand up to him. He’s not invincible as some might think.
I'd hope that the EU would do more than just words. But it would be economic action, not military. I just don't see EU countries getting into a military fight with the US over Greenland. It's as good as lost already in my opinion, the only question is whether the EU/UK are prepared to create a stronger security apparatus for future threats.

If a large country (eg France) goes far right Trump allied then of course it all rapidly falls apart.

Who in NATO do you think will stand up to him? And how? Who has the power? Financial or military? Only Congress can stand in his way, and even then he is as likely to pay attention to them as Boris Johnson did to Parliament and the so-called British Constitution. If the Army is behind him he can do what he likes.

It would certainly present NATO with an interesting conundrum. I wonder if the lawyers have ever explored how to deal with a member state that carries out an act of aggression against another member state?

The "an attack against one is an attack against all" principle suggests to me that the rest of the member states should be obliged to rally to the defence of the state that is subject to the attack, but I haven't read the NATO treaty in any detail. And I have no inclination to do so now!
Yes. Because of the potential for conflict between Greece and Turkey, as explored here NATO's Nightmare: A War Between Greece and Turkey there's a deconfliction channel nato organised https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/news_178523.htm however the USA is obvs top dog in nato and American aggression against a nato country is pretty much without precedent.

I don’t think Trump will use the army as that would have a detrimental effect on the US. He thinks he can do what he likes by threats. He’s just a bully and his bluster needs to be called out.

Well, I expect his bluster will be called out. And then he'll go ahead anyway.
If everyone just keels over then we have no hope. I don’t think that’s the case. In the US people are scared of him and not just immigrants. I don’t think that’s the same elsewhere. If he goes ahead Europe and other Nations might impose sanctions.

They might. But then again they might not. And many European governments are going to take the same supine line of the spineless starmer.

If they impose any sanctions it will be of a nominal sort to make harrumphing noises, not anything that could seriously bite.
Well, that's my guess anyway. We'll see. It's looking pretty grim to me.

I don't think even a hardline diplomatic and economic response will do a lot. America is more powerful and will get its way. I think will likely have negative consequences in the long term but in the short term he will do what he can get away with internally in the US

Jesus fuck this is so nightmarish.
He thrives on fear. Ask him how he’s going to take Greenland if Denmark doesn’t agree? Challenge him. Preferably in front of the world press. Let’s see how much he’s willing to put the US on the line as a potential rogue country?
The US went into Afghanistan and Iraq under the pretext “ security “ this is his excuse for Greenland. If Greenland is protected by NATO then there is no need.

How is he going to take Greenland if Denmark doesn't agree? By sending in the troops - probably not even that many - and taking it, that's how!

What consequences are there for him of becoming a 'rogue country '?

You are still living in a world where the US abides by a set of norms. That appears to be over.

Actually I still think military action is probably unlikely - because before that happens Denmark will fold and agree some kind of fudge whereby Greenland becomes independent under special protection of the US or something that preserves a fiction that the US haven't actually formally invaded.
I'd imagine the Greenlanders would have some say? Maybe they'll decide to have a vote ...

I saw an interview with young Greenlanders who were pro US saying they'd love to have MacDonalds there ..... how sad is that?

I don’t believe Trump will send in the troops. It would be a devastating act by the US. I don’t believe even the GOP would agree with that. Trump is on a roll in the US, but besides the GOP the powers that be in the US won’t allow the US to be ostracised throughout the world. It will have a detrimental effect on the free markets.

Trump is playing with fire.

Think you're wrong. As I said, I don't think he'll need to anyway, but if he did he would get away with it and they won't be ostracised. Because they are more powerful than those who might do the ostracising. It will have consequences for the US sure, but more in terms of making China more powerful. I can't see who in the US would somehow stop this from happening if Trump and his administration decided to do this.

The power in America is in the hands of billionaires who are not necessarily on the same page politically, but risk the free markets and Trump will have his legs cut off.

I think his threats of huge sanctions on neighbouring countries are much more threatening to free markets than taking over Greenland. So far there seems little pushback on these proposals.

The threats of high tariffs on imports does not stop other countries doing the same back io American imports. He’s a fucking idiot playing with the American economy.

Idiot or not he's made it quite clear what the direction of travel is - the US using its economic and military power to get what it wants - and at the expense of traditional allies rather than rogue states. It may well not work economically. But I don't think that means it won't be tried. There isn't some magic authority that's going to step in and prevent it. The only hope really is Republican opposition but I think it's unlikely. Those poeple won't want to put a target on their backs.

Certainly no legitimate need, but I'm sure Trump doesn't give a shiny shite about that.
