Donald Trump - MAGAtwat news and discussion

Only watched snatches and hard to say how it will play; should think trump did better than feared and his base will like his crap, Harris not quite as commanding as you'd hope but landed some decent shots, and making the effort to mention what she'll do for Americans might be enough to swing the tiny section on undecided middle ground types who are apparently going to decide this thing.

This is what the Trump camp has been putting out today:

Won't people think of the kitties :(

It is a bit weird though
I was worried about AI and deep fakes influencing mainstream politics but this wasnt what i had in mind

I couldn't sleep so sat through the whole thing. Shaky start from Harris but she got into her stride. Telling him other world leaders she had spoken to regard him as a laughing stock behind his back and miliatary commanders describe him as a 'disgrace'. Hitting him where it hurts.

Clear win for Harris from where I was sitting. He came across as completely unhinged.

I am only half an hour in so far, just got to the eating pets bit, and was thinking Harris is clearly winning, so checked to see what any poll had concluded, and this one for CNN shows amongst debate watchers a whopping 63% to 37% think that Harris has performed best.

Debate watchers said, 63% to 37%, that Harris turned in a better performance onstage in Philadelphia. Prior to the debate, the same voters were evenly split on which candidate would perform more strongly, with 50% saying Harris would do so and 50% that Trump would. And afterward, 96% of Harris supporters who tuned in said that their chosen candidate had done a better job, while a smaller 69% majority of Trump’s supporters credited him with having a better night.

It's interesting. Harris performed well, but as much as Donald was totally owned and looked stupid at this debate (from a sane perspective), he has not done anything that we have not seen before and his base have been with him all along. I can see Trumpers just brushing off even his worst moments. . "The lefty fake news media wouldn't listen to him even when he told them what he saw on TV with his own eyes about the cats." Nothing that went down last night is going to change hard trumpers minds. General republicans might shrug their shoulders and say "better than democrats. I don't like Kamalas voice. She was disrespectfully laughing at him".
Harris looked strong but people who hate her will just continue to hate her. They will hate that she appears strong (bully, big corrupt government figurehead against freedom lovin' trump), they will spin it any way their brains find acceptable, they invested a lot of time in their beliefs and won't flip just like that.

Trump may have lost voters in issues that actually affect them, like heathcare, childcare and of course Roe Vs Wade. Viewers can see he lied and is still lying to them about things that they are actually experiencing.

So the real fight, as everyone has been saying, is with the swing voters. I think this debate did work for Harris in that respect. If you have not been following the news and have not yet seen trump rallies being taken the mickey out of on the daily show, seth myers, jimmy kimmel et el, then you can see it all here. You can see that Kamala isn't a weak nobody that can't stand her ground. I think in that respect it went well.

In conclusion, the debate seems to have gone as well as it could for the Harris, but won't make anyone switch sides. The democrats can't smugly sit back and declare victory. It's a crazy country. Someone like Trump should not be running, let alone getting votes. . . . . let alone getting 50% of the vote!!!
You can't take anything sane for granted in a country that crazy.

Got a Fox poll, to yang the ying of CNN?

The Daily Beast mentions this one from Newsmax. :D

“Comrade Kamala Harris is going around wanting another Debate because she lost so badly - Just look at the Polls! It’s true with prizefighters, when they lose a fight, they immediately want another. MAGA2024,” Donald Trump posted on his own social media platform. He cited a far-right Newsmax snap poll conducted after the debate that declared Trump the winner over Harris by 93 percent to 6 percent.

But, I suspect that was amongst their viewers, whereas CNN used a proper polling company -

Respondents were recruited to participate before the debate and were selected via a survey of members of the SSRS Opinion Panel, a nationally representative panel recruited using probability-based sampling techniques. Results for the full sample of debate watchers have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 5.3 percentage points.

But, the Daily Beast also reports -

The former president’s alternate reality conflicts with that of others, including his current and former GOP allies who said he blew it on stage Tuesday night against Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris. Even Elon Musk agreed that Harris “exceeded most people’s expectations.”

The conservative aggregation site, the Drudge Report, declared: “The End.” Republican spinmeisters in the debate spin room in Philadelphia couldn’t sugarcoat the situation.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), a golf buddy and close ally of Trump, said the performance by the leader of his party on Tuesday night was a “disaster.” He told reporters in the spin room after the debate that Trump’s debate prep team should be fired.

Republicans on Capitol Hill were downright depressed. “I’m just sad,” one House Republican Trump ally told The Hill. “She knew exactly where to cut to get under his skin." The GOP lawmaker added: “The road just got very narrow" and said, “This is not good.”

Fox News’ Brit Hume said, “Look, make no mistake about it, Trump had a bad night. He rose to the bait repeatedly when she baited him, something I am sure his advisors had begged him not to do.”

I watched it repeated on CNN this morning. I think Harris won hands down. The reason I think that is, Harris talked sense and Trump talked nonsense. I don’t think Trump has serious policies and just spouts fabricated crap that spreads fear and division. It’s his only weapon. Harris spelt out her plans and also pointed out what a easy target Trump is for Dictators.

I think if Trump had been President for the last four years, Ukraine wouldn’t exist today. It seems his answer to invaders is to lie down with them and let them take what they want and then claim to be a peacemaker.

His only defence against Harris is to make up shit about her and he looked completely lost when asked about his accusations about the colour of her skin. Pathetic.

The Washington Post asked a group swing-state voters who they think won the debate, it's a small panel, but still interesting when considered with the betting odds now favouring Harris.

In the first presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump, The Washington Post tried something new: We asked a group of uncommitted, swing-state voters in real time about their reactions to Tuesday’s debate.

They thought Harris performed better, regardless of how they plan to vote in November.

Participants’ answers are edited for clarity and style.

He really went there with the frothing at the mouth internet rumours. It kind of beggars belief that anyone could be saying those things at a presidential debate when it's the kind of discourse that's only fit for yelling at people on a street corner

A people’s debate? WEIRD.

Ask the people to have a debate? Good idea, "the people" could be asked to submit some kind of ballot with an X next to the name of the candidate they want to be president. Each state could count up the Xs for each candidate, and points (maybe call them "electoral college votes") awarded by each state to the winner. The candidate with the most electoral college votes could be declared as the winner of the debate.

That JD Vance is as sharp as a tack, I like the cut of his jib.

I wonder if MAGAs vote for him because he’s insane and they find that exciting?

Well, that was just weird, I liked how Harris came on and walked over to Trump to shake hands in his space on stage, he didn't like that, but she came across as a little nervous answering the first couple of questions, but after that she found her feet and rattled Trump on several occasions, and when he was coming out with complete bollocks, she was just shown laughing, ridiculing him, which was perfect.

The fact that she was fact checked, IIRC, just once to shedloads for Trump, would have stood out to anyone that was paying attention.

None of it will matter to the MAGA lot, but I hope it will shift some of the undecided voters.

I think he left some of his jib on that couch.

Just watching the after debate bit on my C-4 recording, and the presenter asked the two guests to come up with one positive thing about the other candidate.

Republican guest - as a person I think she does have good intent in some situations.

Democrat guest - he probably has very nice golf courses.

:D

Yesterday on CNN leading up to the debate some Republican commentators didn’t give much support for Trump. I think many want to see the back of him.
