Friend of mine was recently badly bitten by her friend's one yr old dog. They know the dog well...and it happened at the dog's own home. She visits this friend very often and has always brought treats for the dog...so they know each other. The owner was outside in the garden with the dog when the friend arrived. So the owner for whatever reason told the dog to go into the house..
The visitor then said same thing to the dog...and suddenly the dog turned on her, bit her on her lower leg and as she tried to get away the dog jumped and bit the back of her thigh..blood everywhere..owner of dog cleaned the wounds in her kitchen...dog was whimpering and very upset looking like he knew he'd done the wrong thing. Needless to say the owner was extremely concerned and insisted on the friend immediately seeing dr for tetanus shots and to dress the wound. Dr had no shots so they ended up in a&e. Stitches, tetanus shot, dressed the wounds. The wounds needed repeat dressings for a week. Two courses of antibiotics.
The owner said the dog lay on its bed for 3 days refusing to eat...and went into a sort of depression.
My friend doesn't want to see the dog put down. It's a collie cross...one yr old. The owner os going to bring the dog for behavioural training etc. What is frightening is that the dog turned on someone he knows very well. Someone who has been in his life from puppy days. The friend is there every second day so ot was very odd that she was bitten. And it just looks like the dog didn't appreciate being told what to do by a visitor...so it attacked.
The person who was bitten is a cancer survivor...and has an unresolved muscular/neuro problem too.
Neither the dog's owner nor the friend who was bitten want the dog put down. Is there a way to ensure that a dog doesnt bite people it knows in its own home?
