Disney + streaming video recommendations thread

The new solar opposites series arrived a few days ago. I've watched three.
Moreso than Rick and Morty, this does so far seem to have lost some of the magic.
Is it just because we are four seasons in, or is it because of Roilands absence. How much did he have to play in this series? He did almost nothing on Rick and morty apart from the voices from fairly early on, but I kind of got the impression solar opposites was his baby.
I don't care about there being a new voice (they didn't go for a soundalike), but I don't think it's a good choice. It sounds like that mac voice that kids use to dub their shite you tube animations.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but the stories seem to be lacking something, and I am not enjoying them working at the rake office.

I was always more interested in the wall anyway.

So, we have been really slow to finish it, because Mrs St8 found she needed breaks to regain her equilibrium, but we've now completed Mr Inbetween.

It is my humble opinion that it knocks everything, everything else into a cocked hat. What an incredible piece of film-making. I mean, the rest of Disney is mostly pointless shite anyway, but I would struggle to think of anything that I've watched anywhere in the last year that comes even close. That ending. Fucking hell.

Not made by Disney, which is probably why it’s not that Disneyish.

Series.

There's a sparse thread that people occasionally bump to go 'fucking hell this is ace' :D

Goddamn it, not on our Disney

And just like buses… Another interesting crime/ mystery series has just arrived. A Murder at the End of the World has just premiered. Main character is a kind of present day Sherlock Holmes young sleuth. First episode very watchable
:)

Please let it be on our Disney. Absolutely adored The OA.

It’s on UK Disney at least. Not sure where you are, but I think I’m right in saying unlike some other stream services, Disney+ makes their content available pretty much everywhere worldwide.

Not in Japan, they don't. Could be to do with translating it. Several times have been excited about titles supposed to be on the channel, only to find out they aren't.

Read somewhere that all of Justified is on it. And nope, just the new season.

Oh noes. I feel your pain entirely though. I’m sick of searching for ‘what’s good streaming in UK this week’, reading reviews about really promising series streaming in X, Y, or Z, and then finding out it’s not available in their UK stream. Even more irritating given that I always ensure I include ‘in the UK’ in my searches.

In fairness, we're spoilt with choice, overall.

I'm having some difficulty getting to the end of episode 2. The basic idea is okay, but the dialogue is awful, the characters largely predictable and why, oh why, does everything have to be filmed like it's a bloody YA drama? Loads of prestige streaming shows seem to be going down that route now.

FAO fans of WWII documentaries. I’ve just watched the first episode of Disney’s much vaunted new documentary, WWII- Secrets from Above, and it’s actually worth checking out. The series is marketed as providing a previously unexplored new viewpoint of various key battles from the air. But that wasn’t the main draw for me, in the first episode at least.

Whereas I’m certain it will not reveal any previously undisclosed facts about the war (how could it at this point really?), I actually found out a few new particulars about D-Day I was previously unaware of- and I’ve watched shit loads of them.

In short: the main draw of the series, namely the clever blend of historical field photography with present-day aerial footage of exactly the same area, hasn’t so far been a particular hit with me. But the actual narrative of the show, including certain aspects of WWII history nerds might be aware of but the general public might not always do, makes this a series worth checking for any fan of the subject.

Two quick updates. Finished Culprits, and really enjoyed. It works very competently as an escapist crime thriller miniseries. Fast paced and gripping, and although he has limited screen time, always great to see Eddie Izzard.

Secondly, Kenneth Branagh’s latest Poirot adaptation, A Haunting in Venice, becomes available tomorrow. I was fully prepared to rent it for a fiver as soon as it became available on Virgin in the coming days/ weeks as I wanted to watch it sooner rather than later, so pleased I won’t have to :)

Four in and the main problem is the ostensible setup - the modern day Sherlock Holmes claim. She just isn't. She isn't even a bog standard investigator at the moment, just another bumbling nerd. She has done absolutely nothing Holmesian. If they wanted an old fashioned Brit detective novel to compare to, then it's something out of an Agatha Christie - the posh house with a disparate array of characters who die off one by one.

As a distraction from actual work, its fine, it certainly isn't 'utterly seductive' though.

Disappointed to hear that, as The OA was utter compelling.

Moving. A new superhero drama series from
Korea. Involving kids struggling with their with superpowers as well as facing an existential threat. Pretty good. Not a kiddies programme by any means, though- quite the contrary.

Culprits is very good for four episodes, then various writers and a different director take the helm for 5. 6 & 7 and it all goes downhill fast. The main writer and director returns for the finale, but it's all gone to pot by then and there's no way to save it. I don't why the decision was made for the show runner to step back for three episodes, but the change was so sudden I actually bothered to look up and see if different writers/directors were suddenly in charge; and they were. Character and plot continuity end up all over the place; there's some really bad writing, and one scene supposed to be in London has a big fucking sign saying MANCHESTER in it; lazy!

I really enjoyed it at the start, but ended up hating every character. They even try to shoe in some moral reasoning for what boils down to a load of cunty behaviour by a bunch of greedy, selfish pricks; it doesn't work at all.

A waste of some very talented actors.

Eddie Izzard is a bit rubbish in it. Niamh Algar is ace, as always.

That explains why I struggled with the later episodes. Like you say it started so well but became background noise by the end.
