Over the years I’ve had multiple negative and/or “jokey” comments, from strangers and people I know, about how milky white I stay all summer and my near inability to get a tan. Yes it is annoying, hurtful and historically has led to me trying to rectify it in ways that weren’t good for me.

But… it’s never cost me a job or housing. It’s never caused people to cross the street to avoid me, or raised my risk of being targeted by the police. It’s never put me at risk of violence or made people see me as subhuman. It’s not the same as racism or colourism at all.

This is possibly the point at which to mention semiotics. Colour in racism is a symbol that represents a bunch of things that aren't really about the amount of melanin present in the top layer of the skin at all (just ask an albino person with African features). But it is an instantly identifiable marker whose owner can do nothing about it. In that limited sense, there is something to be said for the contention that racism based primarily on skin colour whose historical roots lie in the slave trade is a distinct phenomenon with specific insidious characteristics within our society.
