Singer David Van Day has been elected as a local councillor in a by-election.

The former pop star, who rose to fame in the late-1970s as one half of Dollar, stood for the Conservatives in the Aveley and Upland ward on Thurrock Council in Essex.

He won the seat, previously held by independent Tim Aker, by 222 votes.

Mr Van Day said he was "very happy" to have won after a "hard fought campaign".

The singer also performed in a version of Bucks Fizz in the 1990s and was a competitor in ITV's I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! in 2008.

He was in Dollar.
He's a Tory.
He tells us in the BBC piece how many steps a day he averaged in the campaign.

Three reasons to die.

I can remember them, Dollar was a duo that were originally part of one of the earliest "manufactured" pop bands, Guys 'n' Dolls made up of 3 blokes and 3 girls.
The sort of thing that Cowell turns out on a production line now but wasn't so glaring back in the 70's
The original band had a few Top 10 hits then the Dollar duo fell out with the other 4 who carried on has a quartet whilst Dollar had a few hits of their own.
Both outfits were fairly frequent guests on Top of the Pops. they weren't great musically but they were pretty.
It was a kind of a cheesy mass produced pop that mildly grated on your nerves if you heard it on the radio but you'd dance to in a club if you had enough booze in you not to worry about your mates laughing at you.
According to Wikipedia they had more than one hit but Shooting Star is the only one that rings a bell for me.
