I reckon that once the Americans realised he worked for the Pope now, they were ok with him getting back in power.
Overwise Nicaragua would have been Reaganized hard all over again by now. If priests or mullahs gain authority in a culture, the rights of women decline soon after, the poor have no chance and human exploitation can thrive. So it's win for any "United Fruit" company that can get in there, and by now I'm sure they're allowed to by the USG.

An article in the Guardian today about how the Nicaraguan legislature has granted "Absolute power" to Ortega and his wife, who is also currently vice-President.
I've no idea what the reality is but it seems a long way from the vision of liberation we campaigned in support of in the 1980s. Although even then there was the issue of what the regime was actually doing on the Caribbean, but the government accepted that mistakes had hapoened and that retitution would be made, etc. Later there the was the revelation that Ortega sexually abused his stepdaughter.
Maybe, the Sandinistas with their Marxist, poet, priest, government ministers always ticked too many boxes to be true. Not that that could ever detract from just how evil Reagan and his Contra proxies were.
