Croydon - nightlife, accommodation, things to do and general chat

It was only closed for a few hours because of a small fire, which was contained in one room, and put out quickly. Patients were moved to other parts of the hospital, people waiting who were not urgent were sent away, and ambulances were told to take cases elsewhere.

I am sure there will be an enquiry into how it happened, and I am sure it shouldn't have happened, in a brand new A&E department, but everyone is getting a bit hysterical about it.

Nobody was turned away. If someone had crawled there with a burst appendix, they would have been treated!

The department was fully operational again this morning.

Apparently, someone was arrested on suspicion of arson.

About this time last year, I was in St Georges A & E for about 12 hours prior to an emergency admission 😡
Blimey. Lucky for me I got to Croydon at about 4.30am and didn't have long to wait. . . . oh, apart from the fact that just before I went into surgery a few kids had a big knife fight and their resulting wounds jumped the queue . . . I kept getting knocked back until I was critical. That was weird.

That is a relief. I read that article like it was out of action and wouldn't be available for months. Thank you for being the voice of reason.

Thankfully, as I patient, I have not been back to Croydon Uni Hospital for some time.
If I ever needed to go, it used to be following a bike accident. I used to go home, sleep on it and if I still felt rough next morning, I used to go then,
when the queues and waiting times were much smaller.

My daughter has friends who work there, so heard about it while it was happening.

And I was at the hospital yesterday (for an appointment, not an emergency) so asked what had happened.

I was tickled by news items saying that fire had “torn through” A&E and similar.

The A&E department is much better now.

Although the queues are not.

Couldn't see this mentioned in the thread so:

American Assassin (2017) was filmed in Croydon - St George's Walk was used in scenes supposed to be Istanbul! Quite surreal to see as soon as you recognise it.

Skip to 1:06 if you're impatient!

Nearly five and a half years later, the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) is prosecuting Transport for London, Tram Operations Limited and tram driver Alfred Dorris following a detailed and thorough investigation into the fatal Sandilands tram derailment in November 2016:

The Office of Rail and Road launches prosecution over Sandilands tram crash

The trial of the driver of the ill-fated tram is now under way six and a half years after the fatal crash:

Tram driver slept just four hours the night before fatal crash, court hears

Cronx brewery are opening a new taproom in south Croydon, just down from ludoquist. Not open properly yet but they have had a few Saturdays opened in their half ready state.

Went for the soft opening, only cronx beers left so they will have a mix of their own beers plus some from other breweries.

Not sure if they will do food there but the space is huge. Used to be Coffee Shotter

as I didnt commit any criminal damage, it’s virtually legal. It was one of the deep level shelter projects from the war. Was used for some stuff afterwards and sealed off years ago . A human sized crawl access hole is still there if you can find it

I used to go down often. But iirc about 15 years ago they concreted the entrances in due to asbestos. They were basically holes in the floor in the woods

Croydon people, put your CR postcode to good use

get tickets for 9.50 for Talawa's production 'Recognition' about Samuel Coleridge-Taylor composer from South Norwood (booking fee on the phone or you can visit Fairfiled Halls to avoid booking fee)

You just have to ring the box office and say you want the Croydon Resident tickets - I do have a CR postcode but I don't think the box office are that strict about it to be honest

We're lucky that Talawa theatre company are taking up residence in Fairfield Halls

It was built as a shelter but never much used I think as it didnt go online until like 1942 or something- was meant to support the railway station passengers/ trains a few hundred meter away should they get caught in a raid. Was repurposed after the war and yep, I think one of those was a lens grinding setup. Its full of old motorbike and engine bits still from its last use as a garage workshop IIRC>

alas I had only a shitty torch and an excited dog following, so was a bit restricted in what I could do down there.

ETA , heres an Urbex link about its background

15 year old girl ffs.

Bad times.

Irrespective of the fact that it's a private school etc., it's hard to imagine just how difficult things are going to be for all the girls and staff at that school; what a truly terrible week for them.

R4 are reporting that (what appears to be) the perpetrator tried to give her some flowers which she rejected just before the stabbing. Tragic all round. :(
