Cecil, famous Lion from Zimbabwe shot dead by Dentist from Minnesota for $55k

Evil would, though.

"Immoral", certainly, but probably not "evil". Evil is hunting an entire species to extinction (and enjoying it). I reserve "evil" for actions that are intended to cause harm, along with an extra bit of joy or malice.

Rich merchants recruit people living in squalid poverty to risk their lives sourcing a rare commodity; the Indian state in an attempt to gain credit in the eyes of other privileged elites recruit another group of the poor to murder the first and anyone else who is in the way.

These poachers are driven not by pleasure seeking but by economic necessity

Is a 'black' giraffe an actual different/sub species, or is it just an anomaly? Like albino animals?
If its not then I'm not so fussed if it was done legitimately

its a bit shit on all level to shoot giraffes - I can kinda see why some wankers want to kill predators and make themselves feel all powerful - but fucking Giraffes ? they just stand there and eat leaves

admirable targets for people to timorous to face proper prey in the traditional fashion

Do you even have to 'hunt' a giraffe? They pretty much just stand around being giraffes afaik. Not exactly hard to hit with an automatic weapon either.

Evil? Immoral? I don't think it really matters what labels we give to these "activities", most reasonable people can see that they are wrong.

But eating a chicken burger is just as bad etc!
Hmm, is eating a chicken burger just as bad as killing a black giraffe or Cecil? I would argue that it is at minimum "just as bad" and imo probably worse.

The laws of demand and supply mean that millions of folk popping down to KFC or MuckDonalds for their taste pleasure results in their suppliers obliging by killing more land animals in 2 years (112 billion) than the total number of humans that have ever lived (108 billion), and that doesn't even include the sea creatures.

As I've probably posted earlier, the massive disconnect between the burger in the bun and the animals that were killed to create it means that your regular Joe's don't need to bother themselves with the messy details.

On this point I sortof agree with Rogan, there is widespread hypocrisy on this matter...

I have quite a lot of animal activists on my twitter feed so see a lot of pictures of hunters next to the animal they have just killed and the urging to retweet if you want it stopped.

Unfortunately I don't agree with the retweet bit, no one on my lists is pro hunting and retweeting just seems a band aid for the problem rather than a route to a solution.

Trophy hunting in Africa just isn't going to be eradicated by twitter retweets among a few British twitterers.

I actually considered posting on here earlier today to wind you up again but I see my earlier post is still working its magic.

I agree there is confusion.

I wear leather, eat meat, did actually work in a slaughterhouse for a short time and also in a leather tannery, also for a short time. And I have killed and eaten wild rabbits, pigeons, trout, sea fish etc. I do sort of think that if you want to do eat meat and wear leather you should understand how the food chain works and decide which bits of it you are in agreement with.

Agree with this. I had to hide two of my friends on Facebook that I do some animal stuff with that are constantly sharing abuse photos etc. I know it happens and I don't need to see it every day. I appreciate what they are trying to do but several times a day and every day seems exsessive.

Unless we are all going to go out and Sab Savannah hunts there's not much we can do.

I would like that Africa could earn more from photo safari's than they can from hunting, but I don't know if it is possible.

The thing is most people would rather not have to think about it and are happy with the disconnect. Which is why I think in some regards, hunters are more honest and that the majority of folk who eat meat regularly that who despise hunting need to check themselves.

I think it partly comes from the packaging of our meat these days. I swear some people don't make the connection between a cheap wrapped and forensically plucked supermarket chicken and the actual creature that provided that meat.

Perhaps it is more fundamental than that, why is cow meat not called cow meat, pig not called pig, deer not called deer etc .. not the source of the words rather the disconnect it causes when someone buys beefburgers in Morrisons and does not realise the cow at the start of the process.

Anyhow cruelty should be banished from the food chain, as much as humanly possible.

It's true that we are totally disconnected. It makes me laugh when someone says we are apex predictors. Walking into Sainsbury's and picking up a a bit of meat stored in a plastic container isn't quite the same as killing an actual chicken is it?

It's a wider disconnection from Nature in general which is why people don't care if they leave their rubbish somewhere etc.

Yes, I've never understood why humans don't clean up after themselves like foxes, snakes and trees do.

Me too. ;)

You knew what I meant. We're disconnected from our impact on nature and many people don't care unfortunately.
