Cecil, famous Lion from Zimbabwe shot dead by Dentist from Minnesota for $55k

I'm vegetarian, but your self-righteous fingerwagging makes me want to go and find some bacon to sniff.
Excuse me? I don't believe we've been properly introduced. Emerging from the shadows with that rather sophisticated name, I would have thought you'd come up with something a bit more profound than the rather petty and childish "bacon tho" nonsense. So yeah, go for it, knock yerself out, go hog wild and lick a sucklin' pig, that'll teach me.

Anyway, I'll not be accepting your cheap shot and baseless accusation of "self-righteous fingerwagging". It's rather ironic that those in favour of hunting could probably make the same sort of silly remark in response to criticisms... "Finger wagging anti-hunt meat eaters and vegetarians make me want to go shoot me another lion".

That's because of the dairy. Which makes you as bad as a meat eater. Which makes you as bad as Hitler.
A shorter way of saying this is that Hitler was a vegetarian*. Happily complicit in the slavery and rape of cows.

The bastard. I hate him.

* - Hitler may or may not have been a vegetarian for a while.

:D (again)

Well, I suppose, at least Cecil was kinda "free range" which should appease the welfarists a little...

Have we discussed zoos or keeping animals as pets yet? I’m sure I can we can hypocrisy hunt with you also, PS.
I'm sure those subjects have been discussed in other threads, feel free to add to the discussion if that's what interests you.

I imagine that nearly everybody that is outraged by Cecil's ordeal will see it as something that is clearly and obviously wrong, how could anybody object to them expressing displeasure and anger towards the evil hunters/poachers? It's just plain wrong.

Well, it just so happens that some people (not enough people imo) similarly believe that the ordeal that billions of land animals have to endure unnecessarily for our pleasure is also clearly and obviously wrong.

Both those issues are related, they are both animal rights issues. One has a higher profile and is a bit more "sexy" news, the other is routine, not really news worthy and done on an industrial scale and is seen as absolutely normal.

Apparently it would be perfectly ok for me to join in with the popular protest against what happened to Cecil 'til the cows come home and would get plenty of support and agreement from regular punters, however if I were to even hint at raising the topic of what happens to the cows from where we get our steaks and milk, that is seen as being fingerwagging and extreme.

So, what's the difference?

Unfortunately, some people do get a bit agitated and uncomfortable when some of the things that they hold dear and have become strongly attached to, are shown to be morally inconsistent and questionable. I don't think that's a good enough reason to stop people expressing their opinion and standing up for the rights of animals. That's not hypocrisy hunting imo, to me it's an obvious injustice which is perhaps not as obvious to some people.

I have a very simple system for deciding whether hunting or gathering a particular species is wrong: is it classified as anything other than "Least Concern" by the IUCN Red List? If yes, then it's wrong.

I admit that this is for entirely selfish reasons though; living in a world of decreasing biodiversity is highly likely to be a shit kind of life.

what ?
that's a weak excuse, if I ever heard one - the radio tags on elephants are not tiny !

even the tighter collars should be visible when the ears are flapped - which happens a lot, so the trackers appear not to have done their job at watching/ stalking the poor target.

Trophy hunting should be made illegal.

"Take only pictures, leave only foot prints !"

As Australian cricketers doing dodgy stuff is big news nowadays...here's a reminder of past Australian cricketer dodgy behaviour...(which he has since said he regrets)

Well this isn't quite a quite a trophy kill, but...

...she got a ribbon out of it. Tweet has been deleted so maybe she isn't that proud of chopping up her cute baby Piston.

CHEYENNE — Seventy-six wolves were killed by hunters and others in Wyoming last year when the state resumed its management of the animals.

Ken Mills, lead wolf biologist with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, said 43 wolves were legally hunted and one illegally hunted in the state during a licensed hunting season from October through December.

That met the state’s hunting quota of 44 set by game managers.

44 wolves taken in first wolf hunt in Wyoming since 2013

You'll notice the tendency to under-report the numbers killed. That's actually quite a large percentage of the wolf population in Wyoming, which some estimates have put at 380. I've seen some estimates that quite a bit lower.

Alaska:

Following a spike in winter wolf kills by hunters and trappers, the state has put in place an emergency ban on hunting and trapping wolves near Denali National Park and Preserve.

The ban, announced Friday for the Stampede Trail corridor, involves an area where wolves range from protected park territory, where trapping and hunting are illegal, to places outside the park where trapping and hunting are allowed.

The ban marks the latest round of tension in the push-pull between Alaskans who see Denali wolf protections as federal overreach and those who value wildlife viewing in the park. About 650,000 people visit Denali every year, many hoping to glimpse a wild wolf. Authorities say just a handful of trappers target the animals near the park.

The authorities at a national park in India protect the wildlife by shooting suspected poachers dead. But has the war against poaching gone too far?

Kaziranga National Park is an incredible story of conservation success.

There were just a handful of Indian one-horned rhinoceros left when the park was set up a century ago in Assam, in India's far east. Now there are more than 2,400 - two-thirds of the entire world population.

This is where David Attenborough's team came to film for Planet Earth II. William and Catherine, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, came here last year.

But the way the park protects the animals is controversial. Its rangers have been given the kind of powers to shoot and kill normally only conferred on armed forces policing civil unrest.

The park that shoots people to protect rhinos

Interesting approach. "Controversial" probably doesn't begin to cover it.

That wouldn't surprise me.

Although I couldn't condone it, even though humans are not in any way endangered as a species.
