Participation in grassroots football in Cardiff could drop next season – with some clubs collapsing altogether – if proposals to hike pitch fees by 44% go ahead, league secretaries have warned.
Labour-run Cardiff council is proposing to increase its football pitch and changing room charge from £38 to £55 per game, while pitch-only fees will more than double to £44.
Rugby, cricket and baseball will see similar price rises from April 1 if the budget for 2013/14 is approved at tomorrow night’s full council meeting.
It’s proposed the rugby pitch and changing room charge will more than double from £38 to £75, while the pitch-only fee will treble from £20.50 to £60.
According to the draft budget papers, winter sports charges will cost £2.50 per player, while summer sports will be £3 per player. This includes a new cricket pitch charge of £55, while the baseball pitch and changing facilities fee will rise from £38 to £66.
The proposals do not impact on junior sports as there is no charge for youth football, rugby, cricket or baseball.

A “major” cannabis factory was discovered today at a Cardiff industrial estate after an early morning drugs raid.
The find came as part of a series of synchronised dawn raids at 10 properties across South Wales and the west of England, which brought to an end an operation in which 7,500 cannabis plants worth an estimated £3.5m have been seized by police.
Over two-and-a-half years, Operation Pristina has seen 26 properties raided and more than £400,000 seized in cash.
Around 130 police officers today raided properties in Cardiff, Newport, Bath and Bristol – arresting seven men and a woman.
In the process drugs officers said they discovered and dismantled a “major” cannabis factory in Eastgate Business Park, off Wentloog Avenue in Rumney, Cardiff.
