It's still out there, it's on my neighbour's roof now, it hasn't really got a beak as such, it's like a long, pointed spike. That's why I know it can't be a robin. If the one in that pic is a robin then it's a bit like that except for the beak. And it's alot longer than I origionally thought, probably about 3-4 inches.Maybe more.
This is really doing my head in, I have got to find out what it is or I will go nuts!

 why is the pic too big? Click the link...

I am convnced it is a nuthatch

Nuthatch
Sitta europaea
The nuthatch is a plump bird about the size of a great tit that resembles a small woodpecker. It is blue-grey above and whitish below, with chestnut on its sides and under its tail. It has a black stripe on its head, a long black pointed bill, and short legs. It breeds in central and southern England and in Wales, and is resident, with birds seldom travelling far from the woods where they hatch.

Where does it live?
Breeding
Mature deciduous woods, especially large oakwoods, wooded parks and gardens.
Wintering
The same as breeding habitats.
Where to see it
Best looked for in mature woods and established parkland in central and southern England and Wales, on the sides of tree trunks and underside of branches. Occasional sightings in Scotland.
What does it eat?
Insects, hazel nuts, acorns, beechmast and other nuts and seed.
What does it sound like?
Its call is a loud ringing ‘tuit, tuit, tuit-tuit’. Also a loud rattling ‘pee, pee, pee’ trill.
When to see it
All year round.

from what ive seen of actual pictures of nuthatches on google, they arent actually that red - more of an orangey buff colour :( disappointing all the illustrations show them as being fairly reddish

What about this?

No, it's not that either, Try to imagine a larger version of a robin with a huge black nail sticking out of it's head instead of a beak, that's what it looks like.In fact, it reminds me of this:

Oh shit, sorry! In my first post I said as big as a sparrow but I should have but magpie, sorry! It's because my son was talking about sparrows as I was typing.

I'm not! It's been doing my head in all day, I have looked at endless pics of British birds and it's not there, the closest I can get to it is a robin, but the red bit on it's front goes alot further down it's body, almost to the legs. And it won't eat the bird seed I put out, all it does is dig around for worms.
