It can be used as an endearment, though. (Unless my Da just thought we were all idiots and said so on a regular basis...)

I think your dad is kinda right. A lot of words can be a term of endearment, depends on tone imo. "Ach ye daft tumshie" is quite different to "YE GREAT FECKING TUMSHIE"

Its derivation is from turnip. So that's the original meaning. The daftie thing is a metaphor.

Yeah i got that, id just never heard a turnip being called a tumshie until 5 minutes ago. Always been either turnips or neeps to me.

It's a regional thing. My Dad says it, and he's from Lanarkshire.

Just texted my mum . She said the same as me but my dad said the turnip thing. Theyre both born & bred weegies.
