buying a new pillow

Now here is something I really notice when I visit the States -- how stingy the hotels are with pillows.

In Vietnam babies are started out with a body-length pillow to wrap themselves around plus something for their feet and something for their head plus a couple more for good measure.

I grew up that way and have always had a dozen or so pillows on my bed, plus a couple towels. We don't use blankets much (don't need them) but pillows are another thing. We use each other for pillows if nothing else, and no one sleeps alone.

I got some duck feather ones from Argos. Haven't slept on them yet - just got them home - they stink a bit! I expect an amazing nights sleep tonight though.

The only time I bought feather pillows I woke up with what felt like a brick under my head and a headache.

Sleep well!

:( Lucky i only spent £10 then.
I did go to John Lewis yesterday though and rested my head on a £150 goose feather pillow. Wow is all i can say. I've never felt such luxury under my head before. And probably never will. Even if i had the money, just don't think i could ever justify spending that kind of money on a pillow.

You can sometimes find goosedown pillows on ebay but you're never sure of the quality or fill power and percentage of down to feathers, but for four pillows, this seems incredibly cheap

This single one is probably better though

well it's 85% duck feather, 15% down...:hmm:
Tbh, you should see what i've been sleeping on for the last 10 years of my life - i think these pillows are going to feel like total luxury to me in comparison! I actually think one of my current pillows is stuffed with left over beans i was using to make a bean bag with :D

:D

Too much feather, not enough down

I like that kinda pillow.

I tried all sorts of pillows after I broke my neck. I actually find the cheaper ikea ones are best.
Those curvy ones that are supposed to be shaped to your head and neck are a load of bollocks.

I had one of the original Tempur ones like that. Far too low unless you sleep on your back. Even then it was pushing it and I have practically no neck.

Have a dozen or so pillows of every conceivable shape and size and material on your bed and toss them around wedge them here and there. Sooner or later you will get what you want.

well, first night on new pillows.....when i first lay down and put my head on them, it felt amazing and i was lying in bed muttering oh my GOD to myself for about an hour :D But then half way through the night, my neck started hurting and i started getting annoyed  Probably because i had 2 pillows rather than 1 - which is the equivalent of probably 4 of my normal pillows. Will try with 1 tonight.

Two pillows is too many in my opinion. It doesn't seem like a natural position to lie in. One is enough, especially if they're new.

There's nothing like being comfy in bed. :) I fling myself around all night, so I need a choice and number of pillows to try to get settled.

Now has anyone got a couple of cheap ones that have gone flat? I've decided I need flat ones to add to my pillow menagerie.

I bought two £10 pillows from John Lewis early December. They're doing pretty well. We intended them to be underneath pillows but we are actually quite liking them and they have become our on top pillows :)

The thing about Americans and their pillows is that you are allowed only one. I wonder if its that way in Britain -- from the messages I gather otherwise but not usually. Americans, as far as I can tell, think it babyish to have more than one pillow, and getting extra pillows in hotels there is a real pain.

I grew up with a body-pillow, and have always had one. Not all Vietnamese do -- but most do. This is a long down pillow that you wrap yourself around. Then we also often have an assortment of other pillows, one or two more down for our head and various other materials (what are called bean-bags) to wedge in wherever. I think all this makes for a happier population.

Until recently most Vietnamese slept on sleeping mats (weaved straw on the floor) so these pillows helped. The Western foam mattresses have now taken over, but I think that, regardless, the pillows will stay.

In my family, two feather pillows were the norm. Although it'd be more accurate to say "two pillowcases", since really old pillows ended up being stuffed two at a time into one pillowcase, with a newer pillow in the other pillowcase. And if anyone got a bad cold or chest infection, there'd be a third pillow added to form a /-\ shape in order to make breathing easier.

Any more than one pillow under my head and I start to feel nauseous. Must be the weird neck angle.
