Brown's speech

Perhaps. And perhaps he thinks the same about your views. Perhaps not. Point is, people who make personal attacks invite the same tactic against themselves. Some are fine with that, and enjoy trading insults. Two problems: lots of people don't like it, and don't deserve to be subjected to it. And pragmatically, it turns a debate into a brawl, and the issue gets lost in the resulting slagging match. Whatever you think of other posters, keeping to rules of engagement helps keep things on topic.

You may have seen an explanation of sorts elsewhere.

If they were paying for it themselves I'd disapprove but I'd have far fewer grounds for complaint.

This is exactly the line I take with drug abusers. If they fund their own habit via lawful means, and take drugs in private, I think it should be legal.

So basically if you're rich it's ok to fuck up, but the poor should be damn well punished when they make mistakes.

Everyone should pay their way. If you can't afford to make certain mistakes you should be extra careful to avoid them.

Let's be honest. Right now we're not even talking about mistakes half the time. We're talking about second and third generation unwed mothers for whom benefit dependency is a way of life.

Indeed, and I disagree with the language untethered directs at single mothers.

If you're throwing money at a drug addiction, odds are you won't be rich for long!

This isn't about bashing the poor but what taxpayers should be expected to fund. If they should subsidise people's drug habits, you could likewise argue that they should buy fags for the clientele of a working men's club.

my goodness, you really are an offensive blinkered wilfully ignorant smallminded prejudger aren't you. Blank that out.

Those single moms

Causing a recession, plunging the country into trillions of debt... when will they learn eh

It's a little reported fact that the collapse of Lehman Brothers was caused by a gang of feral kids in Reading.

Christ, you actually have a sense of humour.

Look, how many single/unmarried mothers do you actually know untethered? Because I personally am one, and I can think of 4 others amongst my own friends or the mums of my daughter's school friends, and not one of us fits your stereotype.

Fascinating.

I have it on good authority that Muslims are the root cause of terrorism.

That said, let's stick to one issue at a time.

as long as its one of your choosing, huh?

So it transpires the 'new' announcement on teen parents is nothing of the kind, and simply refers to expanding existing provision.

Other 'new' promises include a weaker version of a twelve year old promise on voting reform, a probably unenforceable way of recalling MP's, and a couple of nice sounding, but not really thought through, announcements on social care and childcare. Not really enough to change many people's minds, I wouldnt have thought.

How many unwed mothers do I need to know before I can decide that I don't want to pay for them?

I don't know any murderers and yet I'm pretty sure I'm happy for murderers to spend the rest of their lives in prison.

well I don't particularly want to pay tax so someone will look after nasty selfish people like you when you're old and incontinent, and yet I do, out of the goodness of my heart.

It sounds like you do it with pretty bad grace. Why bother?

I'm making provision for paying for my own retirement and any healthcare that may be necessary.

well hark at the pot.

But I don't support unwed mothers out of "the goodness of my heart".

I do it because if I don't pay my taxes I'll be arrested and sent to jail. I make absolutely no attempt to try to make a virtue of being forcibly deprived of the money I've earned. It's money with menaces.

I'd support a two-tier tax system where people like you could pay for various forms of social provision and people like me could opt out of both funding it and receiving those benefits. It would suit me down to the ground.

ooh marvellous, we've got to 'people like you' now. And what exactly do you know about 'people like me' untethered, seeing as you've pretty much admitted you don't know any single mothers in real life?

I'm referring to people that prefer a high-tax/large-state economy to the opposite.

I may not know many unwed mothers but I know plenty about socialism.

yeah, of course you are  Well, I've to go to bed now, seeing as I'm getting up early tomorrow to go to work, and seeing as it's like trying to catch water with a sieve arguing with you.

Just as well nu labour are going to be kicked out before these lunatic policies come into law.Brown had to make the speech of his life just to stand still ,he has to much baggage to turn it round .also the sun as turned away from nu labour
