Brixton news, rumours and general chat

This was apparently on at the Academy yesterday. There was a heavy security presence outside including a van which looked like some sort of drug assistance vehicle.
BARRY CAN'T SWIM

The previously cobbled section of Effra Road by Windrush Square is now a much safer and smoother asphalt surface, in particular for cyclists and pedestrians. Shocking it has taken so many years to fix, but a massive improvement going forward.
It's a shame as it's a nice idea but like Exhibition Rd & Upper Ground also show there's no point making cosmetic changes to roads without also taking measures to reduce the amount of traffic on them.

It was originally intended to be the section that would be closed to traffic from time to time for events. Joining up with St Matthews Peace Gardens. But never happened. I tried to get it closed once for a community event and there did not seem to be any recognised process available for achieving it.

Did anyone see the incident yesterday on Effra Road involving a dead cat? I was driving past and got the impression from people's reactions that it had been killed by two dogs being walked off the leash.

Christ. Glad I wasn't there. 😔

It must have happened that moment as there were probably twenty people with hands over mouths and look of total disbelief - some staring at the cat on the pavement and others at the dogs being led away by the owner. If it was the dogs that did it, they were the same ones I described being repelled with a makeshift aerosol flamethrower outside Brixton Wholefoods a few months ago.

That's terrible. Poor cat. Poor owners, if there were any. 😢

Bit more on possible PO closure

Brixton is one of the 115 Post Offices threatened with closure under plans announced today (13 November) by the provider.

The company wants to get rid of Post Offices it owns directly and shift their functions into “partners” like W H Smith – which already houses Streatham’s Post Office.

The move is estimated to put 1,000 jobs at risk.
