More taping off in Acre Lane this morning, outside Lloyd's Bank. Burnt out remains of a couple of mattresses, where the conflagration had shattered the left-hand window. Does anyone know any more?

I walked past a little after midnight and didn't see any tape or police
It was all clear when I came back about 1pm on Sunday. No evidence of damage - wondered if they were searching for a blade or bullet. No appeal has been posted.
In fact the only announcement from MPS related to an early morning stabbing in Clapham - nothing to do with us on Coldharbour Lane.

Big film crew is in action around Electric Lane and other locations. They seemed to have several people trying to block anyone taking pics but - hah! - I grabbed one.

What's the thing under the front of the car?

I'm hearing various rumours about the result of this consultation

I've just received this, about Lambeth's consultation on dog controls. I try not to be too cynical, but I'll be suprised if this is any different to any previous 'consultations', even after the Kerslake report.

Lambeth Council is carrying out a consultation to ask residents for their views on a new proposed Dog Control Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) for Lambeth.
The need for a Dog Control PSPO has arisen due to an increase in dog related anti-social behaviour issues in the borough, such as dog fouling, dogs making unwanted contact or acting aggressively, or being walked in banned areas, such as children’s play areas or formal ornamental gardens. These issues have a detrimental effect on the local community’s quality of life.
The proposed PSPO will be applicable borough wide, or for some proposals restricted to certain areas only, and will apply to publicly accessible land owned by Lambeth Council, including in parks, highways and communal housing land.
For more information and to complete the consultation survey, please click the link below.

some say the dog asbo's are coming in, and specialist wardens are being trained up.
others are saying the scheme has been dropped, although this may only apply to Kennington & Vauxhall Parks
which were due to have a total ban on dogs off lead....

...anyone got the inside story ?

2 local secondary schools closing - apparently due to fall in pupil numbers & the subsequent loss of funding.

(Seems like school places in Lambeth have always been on a rollercoaster as demographics change from generation to generation - I remember when the problem in Lambeth was a lack of places because of all the schools that had closed, and Brixton children scrabbling for out-of-borough places and travelling ridiculous distances in all directions for secondary school)

the wider narrative seems to be fewer kids in London but stats don't seem to show that.
looking at Census figures:
overall population 2011 vs 2021: England ▲6.6% London ▲7.7%
age 0-15 as % of total population:
london, 2011 vs 2021 = 19.8% vs 19.2%
england, 2011 vs 2021 = 18.9% vs 18.5%

Presumably the 0-4 is lower than the older, could also be difference in inner London vs outer.

There could be up to 12 Lambeth and Southwark primary schools closing very soon. Lots of primary schools redeveloped cause of the bulge but don't have the expected intake. Glen Brrook and Sudbourne have a lot of class rooms and not enough pupils.

It’s small schools closing so doesn’t need huge numbers I guess.

As I said elsewhere can’t say I’m sorry to see publicly funded faith schools closing tbh.
areas of london as well I guess. more central/expensive areas losing kids, maybe outer areas gaining.

Actually you've just reminded me that was one of the reasons children used to travel out of borough - the few secondary schools left in Lambeth back then were mainly faith schools, and single-sex.

AFAIK the mixed, non-faith secondaries that opened to address this are still going strong, which is a good thing.

I suppose there's more fragmentation than before as most schools are part of academy chains now, but then London secondary schooling (in the early to mid 2000s) always did feel to me to be weirdly segregated & fragmented compared to outside London.

I don't believe demand is falling. All Lambeth will do is forward the kids to City Heights and Evelyn Grace which are under subscribed and save a few quid

I'll rely on personal experience
Almost every single school in Lambeth is desperate to fill their roll. Primaries that used to have huge waiting lists are easy to get into, less popular ones are under threat of closure.
It's only just really hitting the secondaries, but we're not taking a full year 7 intake for granted.
And it's not just Lambeth. I was shocked today to see my year 3 son's class photo with only 20 students in another nearish inner London borough, his school has always been popular but as it's a six form entry, they just can't fill it.

My kids classes are still well into the 30s. My 14 year old son has a 40 minute commute to school. It was very difficult to find anywhere half decent. How come there's such a huge change in a few years?

Those are 'forecast' numbers. And not all going down. But yeah clearly some drops.
Does that match the census numbers for Lambeth? Or is it about kids going private?

It's still difficult to get into a good secondary, but there are loads of primaries. Also the deficit is only just hitting secondaries.

Seems to be a decrease in the birthrate with main causes being house prices & rental costs and Brexit.
Yes, that's basically what they say:

They're don't mention that they built too many new schools ten years ago and don't care because they have a massive electoral majority.

Yes, as someone with a young family and thinking about primary schools, we are spoiled for choice at the moment. At least four or five in easy walking distance. That's probably not sustainable.

And the reason we are here is because we could afford to buy a house here, but in order to afford it we had to be in the top 10% of household income.

It's unsustainable to have to be able to afford £2500-3000 per month in rent/mortgage as the price to live in Lambeth as a family.
