British Sausage Week - 26th October to 1st November

Sadly not old bean.
He has a unit where he prepares all his pies, sausages, bacon and cooked meat. He told me earlier he is having to consider downsizing due to the ongoing COVID restrictions. The impact on eateries using his produce is debilitating.
That's a shame. He sounds like what I'm looking for. You'd think it'd be a piece of piss to find decent sausages in London, but with the demise of Biggles, and Simply Sausages, it really has become hit-and-miss for the highly selective sausage connoisseur. You have to sample a lot of pretty ordinary fare before finding something reasonably acceptable and I've yet to find an absolute knockout banger of the standard of Biggles' Honey and Pork, or Simply's London Breakfast. Google tells me that Roadkill's, Heaps recommendation could prove fruitful as the proprietor, Martin Heap, was the brains behind Simply Sausages, so I'm planning a trip to Greenwich in the not too distant.

The local butcher in the next village closed in January this year. It’s difficult to find decent quality produce, supermarket varieties are so bland. Even the award winning Doncaster market hall is dwindling in outlets.

Have you tried Villagers' Sausages in Beckenham?

I'm not saying they're definitely what you're looking for as a Villagers' sausage has not passed my lips in many years, but you could try them.

I am limited by choice of sausage where I am but just had a lovely Sainsbury's taste the difference The peppery one meal. Sausages cooked on a bed of yellow & red peppers (2 of each) with mini new potatoes & petit pois with a scrumptious gravy made from the juices.

Will have to have sausages again this week as it is BSW.

This place on Moxon Street is good, and they have a few outlets in London. Plus order online.

You can do a butchery /sausage class cancelled due to Covid-19

I've been getting my sausages from

Initially from Wells Market but since Covid I've had two, shall we say, above average sized orders

If you're looking for a sausage tasting like they did in yester year you cannot beat their gold award winning traditional

Cannot vouch for their beef products but knowing Ivan (the owner), as I do personally, I'd be amazed if they were anything less than his pork products, which are stunning

I recommend this lot for Very Good sausages M.Moen & Sons Top of Clapham Common. It’s been years since I’ve been, of course, but did get a brace of unusual and delicious bangers there on the regular 👍🏼

Nice one. An online shop too.

I've just ordered a half kilo each of the Villagers Specials, Ken'n Eddies, Pork and Honey, and Breakfast Specials.

Delivery's a bit lumpy at £8.50 but could be worth it.

I will report back.

Good man . . . I am confident that you won't be disappointed - Traditional, the marmalade ones, which don't sound nice but are magnificent, a hint of orange, not overpowering. The Glastonbury ale ones, the ale smells a lot stronger than there is taste, again subtle. I should be on commission

Infact I am SO confident in these sausages, that I will PERSONALLY underwrite £15 of your order (with a donation of that amount to the server fund) should whatever you order disappoint . . . THAT's how confident I am

Marmalade sausages sound spot-on.

Next on my list

Cor. Marmalade sausages sound splendid. Shame I am so far away.
I am partial to a toasted bagel, marmalade and sausage sandwich. Might have to have that for dinner today.

Anyone got any sausage recommendations? Since Biggles closed I've struggled to find a truly great sausage and find most of the generally available offerings either too dry, underseasoned, or both. A local butcher does a decent Cumberland but I'm extemely particular about the sausages I nosh so I've had little variation for quite a while.

I would recommend these bad boys. They do online, but next time I'm in that London I will be paying them a visit. The rest of their sausages, in fact, all the meat I've bought from there is fucking lush.

Urk, sausages. Ghastly things. I do, however cook the horrors at least once a week and will grudgingly eat one. This household is devoted to Newmarket sausages, with some dissent between the Powters and Musks fans...apart from D-i-L who prefers some abomination with apple (Waitrose Bramley apple and Pork).

These arrived yesterday and I have to say they are excellent. I'm particularly impressed by the Honey and Pork, and the Special Pork.

Where these chaps have got it right is not just in the flavours and seasonings but also in the meat itself. There is some rusk in these and they're far better for it. The vast majority of the "100% meat" offerings are simply too dry and lack texture. The fact is, a decent sausage needs a bit of filler to absorb the juices and give them a softer bite. People tend to look at sausages and think that if they contain rusk or another filler they're getting ripped off. That used to be the case when there was tons of the stuff in them just used as a bulking agent, but used correctly they can make the banger, as they do here.

Exceptional fare and thoroughly recommended. Cheers RubyToogood
